Why Don't Women Tune Into "Forefront Listening" Stations The Way Men Do?

Men seem to dominate the listening pattern of active radio stations. At the risk of inviting sexist comments (but don't let that stop you), what's your take on this?

Do you only consider talk stations as "forefront listening"? I know women who listen to every word Kent & Alan say or John Tesh or Delilah.

Why can't a music format be someone's P1 station?

Typically "forefront" stations are ones talking at you. Music is typically on in the background while you do other things, while talk is in your face. Some morning shows, while on music stations, are definitely forefront shows. (Howard Stern is the best example...no one has him on in the background) How many time have been listening to a music station in your car and you just can't stop listening...you're sitting in the parking lot at work, and you have to keep listening. Sure, it may be a good song, but you can always hear that on your iPod. Talk is not something you can just go find. It happens, LIVE and then it's gone. Of course you could download the podcast of that show, if they offer that, but it's not the same.

This, in my opinion, is the problem with radio in Seattle...there is no "I am late for work because I couldn't get out of my car" morning show (or any other daypart for that matter) in this town.

Re: Why Don't Women Tune Into "Forefront Listening" Stations The Way Men Do?

In my question, I did not indicate that a music station could not be a person's P1. I was addressing what I see as a pattern in programming for male and female listenership. I myself consider several music stations as "foreground". Stations that have music that makes you sing along to...country and perhaps even classic rock are music formats that have songs that tend to be foreground. Country definitely has a strong female listenership, but it seems that stations that are known widely as passive, background listening skew female (I hear many discuss this when it comes to the PPM as rationale how some top rated stations realized their larger ratings, that their signals are being picked up by the PPM in businesses in a passive, BACKGROUND way). As for talk stations, outside of NPR, what commercial talk radio skew female?

Have you heard most of the morning shows. OBNOXIOUS. Non stop laughter, yelling, Etc

What's the name of the loud mouth Chelsie on Cable. I doubt anyone over 30 is listening.
