Why I'm not buying Internet radio Yet and what it will take to GET me to Buy it.

First a little bit of background.

I am a former Internet Radio guy. Ran a modestly programmed local station for 5 years starting right when "Real Audio 3.0" came out. Got out of it about 10 years ago.

Obviously, things have changed.

No more need for ISDN, My cable is 1/4 the cost and is much faster. Wasn't available then

The major hurdle then was that "In order to listen to the radio, you had to busy out your phone." Thank God things are MUCH better now.

You can buy an appliance and listen anywhere on your property with relative ease. That's all I was lookng for a decade ago. Now we're looking at the possibility of actually competing with terrestrial radio. But the problem is more wide spread mobility. There is the issue of listening in cars.

I have Sprint Broadband available in vehicles right now in my area. I have a card in my laptop and see that it is an acceptable delivery method if it wasn't so clunky - Hardware wise. My question is.

Is there some type of intelligent interface that allows Internet radio in cars???

I guess I'd be looking for an IPod type device that accepts a broadband card. Or maybe a radio without a Phone. Maybe even an easy to use phone that doesn't require you to be a geek.

My market is a group of 40+ somethings who aren't exactly tech saavy. How do I show these folks that Internet radio is not just a fad and get them to buy in and get the ability to tune in, easily. We have a proven programming idea. We have the content connection. And we have a captive audience.

I need simple Cheap delivery over the net.

My radio buddies tell me it isn't here and I haven't seen it, yet. But I'm REAL interested. How do I do it?

Remember I'm going to need easy access. (God I can only imagine a sung IP address from Jinglefly, but either that or a "Domain name" that points directly to a stream. (I can see this.)

Now I'll be honest and tell you that I HAVE made fun of Internet casters very recently on another board. That's because I WAS one. I learned the hard way that advertiser supported internet radio didin't work in the 1990's. 100 listeners across the globe is not saleable. But 50 in a community is.

If I can find an effective delivery system, I'll bet it WILL work in the late 2000's.
(That's now)

I need ideas. How about it y'all. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THIS DONE?

Clouseau.

Is there a workable wireless solution TODAY???.

Maybe the title of this post scared people away.

Folks over here seem to have a pretty good grasp of technology. Is there a device which can effectivly receive internet audio where wireless broadband is available from Sprint or Cingular? Even at $59.00 a month for the broadband?

If so, I'd like to find it and see how it might work. Anybody???

Bueller???

Let me genuinely thank you for responding. I have seen this one, and I'm looking for a way to reach people in a more mobile setting. Power cords are a problem. Cars would be great, but I could even live with "The Beach". I'm looking to leverage the broadband capability of Sprint or Cingular to get mobile radio. I'm in a vacation area and MIGHT be able to clip someone for 10-20 dollars for a weekly rental of a practical device. Does it exist, yet??

Hey Clouseau,

Try this one from Sprint. I use the Verizon Wireless XV6700 version. Great EV-DO and Wi-Fi wireless Internet-capable radio with excellent audio quality.

I suggest you pick up a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor to hear the audio.

The built-in Windows Media Player can handle wma streams. There are plenty of programs, free and otherwise, that can handle mp3 and other kinds of streams.

Also, I think D-Link or Kyocera makes an EV-DO (to Wi-Fi) wireless router.

Uhh...Far be it for me to burst your bubble, but Live365 has survived nearly NINE YEARS using (Among other things) advertiser-supported Internet Radio. They've also made a pretty tidy profit from the banner network they have on their site too. So before you don your I-Know-What-I'm-Talking-About-Because-I-Worked-In-The-Industry-And-Learned-The-Hard-Way hat, you might check 'em out and ask some questions.

Cheers :D
