Why Is WBCN 104.1 FM Ahead of NBC On Patriots Game?

Anyone know why the audio of the Patriots game on WBCN is 6 to 8 seconds ahead of the coverage on NBC Channel 7. Is it the cable service, Comcast, that causes the delay off its satellite? Rather hear the radio coverage than Al Michaels and John Madden.

HD signal on TV (even if you're not watching it on HD) lags behind. Same thing happened to me at
work; we have a TV on in the lunchroom and it was set to Ch 7. I had an AM/FM/TV Sound/Weather
"Walkman" and the signal on my radio was ahead of what was on TV. (Such radios will not work,
at least the TV-Audio part, after Feb of '09 when analog signals get shut down. )

I'm guessing that it's satellite b/c I have DirecTV myself, and yes, Casa and Raccoon, I preferred Gil and Gino (the latter who loses it a little over the out-of-town scores) over Al and John. I was delighted over the opening interception and thought that it was going to be another blowout. I usually go to these games, but my group sold the tickets to this game in order to afford the two Pats' playoff games - just as well b/c I was feeling lousy all weekend anyway - just be glad you didn't go near me at work on Friday, Casa!

Probably a number of factors...

- It takes a bit of time for various bits of digital processing gear to do their magic on the video in the truck at the stadium.

- NBC has to satellite the game back to New York where the commercials and half-time show are integrated, then satellite it back to their affiliates including Channel 7. The dual satellite hops take about a second. Digital processing delays in New York add a bit to that.

- It takes a bit of time for various bits of digital processing gear to do their magic on the NBC video feed when it comes into Channel 7, and to get that video to the transmitter. (or, more likely, if Comcast has a direct fiber feed rather than picking up the station off-air, there are delays in the fiber equipment.)

- Do you have digital cable? There are coding delays both at Comcast and in your cable box.

It would not surprise me to see these add up to 6-8 seconds. Obviously you weren't watching on Dish/DirecTV, where the delays are even greater!

Another factor may be that NFL games are fixed, just like TV wrestling (why do some people call it "professional" wrestling? Just because they're PAID? Hey, Monday is trash pickup day in my neighborhood...do they call the guys who work for WM "professional" trash picker-uppers? Well they should, but not wrestlers.) Thet follow a script and sometimes radio and TV read the script at different times.

My TV's without a cabl box, is ahead of my TV's with a cable box .

NFL Fixed ;D ! The league want The Pats go 16-0 ( 19-0 include the playoffs ) and Miami to go 0-16 . Big City, Green Bay go 15-1 and Little City, New York ( Jets )go 2-14 . Now thats a good Fixed .

I have the same problem with my Comcast box. When I'm watching the games at home, I watch them through my VCR, which allows for better synchronization with WBCN.

with all the satellite hopping and the pauses for those with DVrs,the days of perfect synchronizing with the radio may be behind us,unless they use the radio signal as an alternative audio channel.

I usually try to delay my DVR for the six to eight seconds but it always ends up out of synch again. It miss the days of turning down the TV and listening to the local guys.

Though there's also a 6-8 second coding delay if the radio station is HD, which would bring radio & TV back into sync... now the only problem is if you're trying to listen to the game in the stadium...

I have a solution! At least it's what I do to watch the Pats on TV and get the audio from radio at the same time.
I have Sirius Satellite Radio which picks up the BCN feed and it's on a bit of a delay as well. I hit pause on my cable TV remote til I hear the ref's whistle blow on a play, and press play on the remote again. Everything is in sync. It may take a few tries, but I got pretty good at syncing up Satellite Radio and Cable TV!

Enjoy!
