Why isn't there a Full Market signal playing all Black Gospel?

It's amazing that all of you come up with formats that have failed before in Chicago and you still want them back on Chicago Full sticks, yet here's one that hasn't been done on a Full stick: Black Gospel. Come on, Chicago has a huge Black Population and they need some inspiration! Don't give me that we have 102.3 already crap, I said a full stick, not some lame fuzzy stick that can't even cover Gary let alone Chicago.

So how about it? Forget about your oldies, dance, active rock, and other crap that will never work, let's shout "Hallelujah" or get yo "Praise" on. Mabye 95.5, since CC has dumped Smooth Jazz stations.

1390 WGRB is a full market signal playing all black gospel as is WVAZ HD-2. I get 1390 just fine in Kenosha (60 miles north of Chicago) and its on the southside of Chicago where the majority of the African-American population lives. I can't get many others from south of Chicago with a good signal except for WRDZ which is highly directional to the north. So 1390 covers the whole area just fine in addition to being located where the majority of its target demo resides.

In addition, there is 1570 WBGX in Harvey (79% of Harvey's population is African-American) which blankets most of Chicago and Gary. So that's 3 Black Gospel outlets (3 cover Chicago perfect) in addition to 102.3.

Ok, let me re state.

I was talking a full FM market stick, not in HD-2, and not AM.

That would be more viable then these piece of work formats this board seems to come up with ie Active Rock, dance, which DO belong on HD-2 and nowhere else.

CC only dumped one SJ station (WJJZ). And CC already owns 1390, so what would they gain by putting it on FM? If it were a success, it would only cannibalize WVAZ and WGCI.

I see NOTHING wrong with putting a gospel signal on a "full market" AM signal.. youre going to have issues with building penetration and signal no matter where/what it's on....

O - picky, aren't we? Mr. Messex, you've made it very easy.

WHY? MONEY.

There are higher mass-appeal formats with alot less RISK to put on FM. Even a brokered foreign language station would be better because it would have a "guaranteed" return. I knlow for a fact even WCEV "auctions" time to the highest bidder. They TURN PEOPLE AWAY.

Besides, WHO has the cash to risk on a black gospel fm when it's already being done well on both 1390 and 1570, despite the fact they are AM?

Honest question from me; Some people believe nobody under 45 even knows am is there. Do Black Gen x'ers (and younger - are they the next demo younger than boomers) embrace Gospel? That might be your answer, as well.

Blues/Gospel. Sounds like a STRANGE MIX.

How can you have the BLUES, lovin' the Lord?

Edwin Hawkins Singers O Happy Day followed by Ball and Chain by Big Mama Thornton.

Drinking Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee - Stick McGhee followed by Stand Still by Shirley Caesar.

It's Tight Like That - Tampa Red followed by Al Green, The Lord will make a Way.

More of a train wreck than a JACK station.

Maybe not together, but in blocks. Right off the bat I can name Big Bill Hill and Nashville's "Hoss" Allen as two old-school R&B/blues DJs who wrapped up their careers playing gospel records, so if separated in blocks it isn't that crazy.

Big Bill Hill on wopa. Wow. I havent thought of him in years.

I remember him having some kind of "youth club" as well. He was also on channel 26 in Chicago for a while.

Not exactly great production, but certainly a sincere guy. He was on for Mackvich (sp?). "712, thats 712, 712 W. Maxwell Street." He was also on for "Dell's mens store. "You'll do well to see Dell."

He must have done someting right. I remember his sponsors about 40 years later.
