Why Radio Sucks....or is it just the people in it.

::) I actually would like to know if ANYONE besides those in the business still listen to ANY Off air radio stations? I find myself scanning the dials just to see what is happening on what station, but I never leave it on one station over a few minutes..It's too naueous (sp)Sickning (sp) Barf! BIG APE

The problem is that you are trying to listen to thost stations that are off air. Those are not on any more. I wish they were, but they are off. If you want to hear what's going on with current radio, you'll need to listen to more of the stations that are on air now. The difference is that they are on air and not off. You can hear the ones that are on, but not the ones that are off. Examp;les of stations that are off are the ones who are not on anymore, like Hot 57, WLLE, the old WKIX, the old WQDR rock station, WYYD, WARR, etc. There are many, many more. On the other hand, if you want to hear some stations that are on the air, just turn your radio power on, then hit the "scan" button until it plays sounds. This is a station that is on air. Iff you don't have scan, you can use the dial. Just turn it slowly, while you listen for sound. Be sure the volume is turned up, too. They're still out there!!!!!! ;D :D :) I hope this helped.

So, Mr. Sniff Goes To Washington, if I understand your post correctly, when I turn my radio on I should be able to hear stations that are ON the air, but when I turn it off, I should be able to hear stations that are OFF the air. Right?

We still listen to radio because it's more convenient than any other medium, even the little doodads that are trying to knock it off its pedestal. That doesn't mean we, as listeners, approve of the changes that degregulation hath wrought. However, I think it's just a matter of time until some new innovation becomes more convenient than a radio, and (most importantly) sounds just as good. For instance, if cell phones had stereo speakers that really sounded as good as an average radio and could fill a room or a vehicle with that good sound, and if wireless broadband with some smokin' speed to it were available on that same phone, then a listener could choose any internet sound source they wanted ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNND get the audio fidelity that currently lacks in most mobile devices with speakers other than earphones.

I don't know how anybody could make money reliably by owning one of those internet sites, but in many cases someone might not even care about making money if they managed to run the site for almost nothing. Unfortunately, the rise of that kind of competition is not likely to spark localized innovation amongst radio station chains. Eventually, however, and possibly after most of the chains just sink into the muck under their own weight, those frequencies, which belong to all of us, will be used for something by somebody, and I hope it's for something better than we've seen since the early 90s. ;D

Re: Why Radio Sucks....

Radio doesn't really suck, but attitudes do. I've been enamored with the biz since the early 60's and the people with the imaginations that made radio great have been suppressed and driven out by the bean counters. The creative energies were mostly squashed because it became more of a bottom-line-driven business meaning no one wanted to take the chances of earlier broadcasters pushing the envelope of on air and commercial creativity. Then came the "blue" era where obscene language and enuindo were the "creative" forces, which we all know is simply a crutch for those who cannot be truly creative. THAT'S when radio really started to "suck." Now with the homogenization of radio, the consolidation, cutbacks, layoffs and the like who's left to be creative? It's now a heartless, souless business community speckled with real creatives placed few and far between. In the triad, Jim Scott writes and produces what I consider to be very creative work, DJ Turner has a quick wit, J.T. Austin is a great producer although not a strong writer, Joe Davis does a very competent job and there are others who, given the chance, could show everybody a thing or two. Radio doesn't really suck, it's the management/ownerships who weighs it down with the politics of the biz. Sad but true..

There is absolutely NO information useful except for a few AM stations WLXN, WSJS etc, I might hit for a few minutes for the weather, but that's another story..Accuweather sucks as does the Weather Channel..One sits in DC and the other in Atlanta and neither gets the forecast right ever! Of course, lets not leave out the local forecasters either...They don't have a clue either! So what else is left..Someone reading the police blotter from the local newspapers or 2 day old news or better yet, Hell, lets just read the NC Summary off the wire. I actually would rather hear the local Obit's light the funeral homes used to air..I guess what I'm saying is..It's a vast wasteland and until someone decides to go back local, the stations are going to continue down the toliet. Comments?? BIG APE

You mean "on air" or "over the air" stations? According to the latest figures from Arbitron, it's about 95% of the country...

Now, Show me those ARB's that 95% of the country listens to ON AIR Radio..If you can do that, well I can make another fortune with advertisers!

Actually, the correct figure is 94.6%. Bank it, it's the lock of the week. I've never been wrong. BOO-YA!

Proof! I want proof! Show me a link to these figures.

Sniff: I have it on good authority that at least 22 people listen to Simon.....13 people listen to Bob....4 people tune in Jack-Off......67 people try to stomach Fred-108.....and 834 people have committed massive acts of perversion while listening to Sarah-38-18-34.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

If indeed true in the end, these figures are dazzling. Thanks Jmbookie :-* :-*

What do you have on Classic Country 98.3? That's where the real story will be, I think. :'( :D

Or WSJS because of politicals. Please share what you have on those two too as well. Thanks again.

If you want proof go to RAB.com and click on the Newsroom and view the radio marketing guide it has national facts and figures

Why would I believe Radio Advertising Bureau? I bet TAB (television Advertising Bureau) has figures that say NOBODY>>>YES NOBODY is listening to Radio!

way to back up your position.

I don't recall actually taking a position, I merely said "show me some #'s

Sniff, Subtract one of those for Simon..He died today!

Hold on....I'm sharpenin' my writin' math pencil! ;D ;D ;)

99% of all figures are wrong anyways, 87% of all people know that.

Now, I want those figures for classic country.

:-\Sniffty, you seem to have such magical, mathematicalesque-ish-like skills. I believe that you could work out an economic stimulus package that would delight everyone at least 93.9% of the time. However, chock full of charm that your comments are, they aren't helping us to understand Why Radio Sucks, now.

Take your average listeners: Ralph Radio and Sherry Scooterpie. Ralph and Sherry are blissfully unaware of the degradation going on right in front of their ears, a little or a lot at a time, ever since the waning days of the Carter administration with Jimmy's poor appointments to the Federal Communications Commission. Those were followed by more disastrous appointments, courtesy of President Reagan, and no other president has lifted a finger to stop what many clunkheaded twits would call the "marketplace restructuring" of our industry. They managed to make millionaires out of a select few thousand individuals, and all it cost us was the airwaves that are supposed to belong to US, the citizens of the United States!

Hopefully, one day, Ralph Radio and Sherry Scooterpie will wake up and shout out their windows that they're mad as hell and they're not gonna take it anymore!!! But I don't think that day is coming anytime, soon.

Scathing assessment OneSomeBeach! But oh so true! I for one am mad as hell at what they've done to the radio industry. The fat cats have sucked it dry and the leaders of our country have let it happen. Gotta wonder if it can ever regain what has been lost.
