WIBC's new Legal ID news sounder

L-A-M-E. Nice to see they updated their sound for the younger generation with that awesome whammy bar. And then they also add the taped weather with Brian Wilkes with an even lamer music bed. If they're trying to compete with WXNT in worst-sounding AM station, I think they just got the edge on the competition.

That is depressing, a travesty in local radio. I haven't heard it, but a heritage station should keep the things that mke it heritage. Such a stupid move. They must be nervous. The programming team over there really is terrible.

This just confirms the fact that they read this board, and that they are getting ready to make big changes at Emmis.

The Riley ID had been a fixture on WIBC through all of the ownership changes. He dates back to the Hilliard days. Chuck now is a voice for hire in LA, doing lots of high end commercials and network VO work.

Chuck's full name is Chuck Hanks, aka Chuck Dann ( when at WKYC). His brother I am told was Buster Bodene on WNAP.

I guess I should take the time to catch WIBC across the TOH and hear what they have done.

I heard the changes on Friday. They are still using the "Radio Indiana" ID (with Chuck Riley - I assume). However, after that, they play the new sounder. It does not sound that great. Kinda cheesey.

Now if they could update their regular voice guy. If you want to reach a younger audience, there's a good idea. His "sincere" reads are so lame.

He's just as bad as the old Gold 104.5 voice guy. Ugh!

Yeah, his brother is Michael Hanks (AKA Bodine)...he's a voice guy out west as well..If you've heard the Guitar Center ads locally (Q95 airs them a lot), that's Bodine's voice you hear.

Totally. Didn't they use the Country Time Lemonade Guy?

That station was so overproduced....a 2 minute song with a 45 second sweeper....promos that were 2 minutes long....made the station so hard to listen too....

but gave Johnny G a hard on

This isn't the first time they've dorked with the TOTH sounder. Just after I moved here in 93 they moved to this weird single-note-decay thing. It lasted a little while and then they went back to the old sounder. And since then they've made more minor tweaks to it, the most major of them being to re-record the "music" (if you can call it that) that went with the vo. I guess what I'm saying is, if their history holds they'll go back to the old sounder before too long here. jim

The sounder has a lot of similarity to WTVN's. Sherrie Fisher recently arrived from WTVN. These sounders sounded pretty good on WTVN. A lot of the problem is matching them with the Radio Indiana ID...pretty abrupt train wreck. If she gets it right, it may work. But she'd got a challenge in fine tuning this one...

Sherrie sounded very polished & confident on WTVN. She's starting to get that sound on WIBC. At first, she sounded a little unsure of herself. Having admired her on WTVN for a decade, I wish her success & look forward to hearing that more "urgent" tone in WIBC's news that was the hallmark of WTVN during her tenure...

The ID sounder wasn't changed...a news sounder was added to the ID.

I finally heard it today... Horrible... I liked the understated stinger better... Now they tried to be fancy by mixing the sounder into the traffic bed, and it just sounds awkward and out of place for their station. Please return to the things that make you WIBC.

It would be nice to be a heritage station, but it really limits your ability to be "fresh," doesn't it? You can't make tweaks... System Overhauls if you'd like to make these changes.

They do tweak it on occasion. They had similar sounders until dropping them last year. This is just a return of the "heritage" from last year. They've used them occasionally for many years.

What is the thinking behind that. Isn't consistency something you are supposed to strive for?

Thank all of your feedback! It is so important to us, and for the most part your listening. Please know WIBC's heritage is very important to us. However, change is good (no really, it is) No it doesn't have to be drastic, but change nonetheless. Give me one example of a successful company who has not changed in some way in the past 5 years. None of the changes are final, but we are NOT going back to the same old same old. We are WIBC and we will stay in the forefront of being your news leader. You are the people who keep us going and please keep the comments coming. I read them, and I listen. Those suggestions may not always change what we're doing, but certainly will have an impact. I promise to continue to make you proud of WIBC and Indiana!

I think we get stuck on things like this ID simply because they are around for so long and probably remind us of "better" times. In the 13 years I've lived here, WIBC has changed about every other imaging element three times, with (afaik) no hue and cry. That ID is probably the only element left that links to the past.

Not that I'm in favor of getting rid of it. I rather like it.

Ms Fisher:

Sometimes, change for changes sake is not the way to go. People like familarity in what they hear and see. WIBC has kept the same air talent for years. Like them or not, listeners ( and non-listeners) know who is on and where to go for whatever they want/need. Granted, it is a 10 second ID, but you would be surprised if THAT where to go. Instant Indy Star coverage, soap operas on TV being interupted....OK I may me exaggerating a little about the soap coverage ;D

Keep up the good work in the news room!

Change is only good if you move forward. Not backward or awkward.

By the way, Pidge and Terry only had 9-11 minutes of content on their morning show in the 7 o'clock hour (and by content I dont mean traffic, weather, or commercials). And it was MySpace for Dummies... Not Kidding. If you think I am exagerating, listen in tomorrow...

How do you explain this?
