Will Chicago's Local TV Newscasts Relocate To Houston (Or Maybe St. Louis) For Games 3-4-5 Of The World Series?

The Chicago White Sox have won their first American League pennant (and the Windy City's first pennant in either major league) since 1959.

They'll go to the World Series where they will play either the St. Louis Cardinals or (more likely) the Houston Astros.

Given that this is Chicago's first World Series since 1959, I wonder if the news departments of WBBM-2, WMAQ-5, WLS-7, WGN-9 and WFLD-32 might decide to originate not just their sports reports, but their entire newscasts (news and weather anchors as well as sports) to whatever city (likely Houston) the White Sox will be in on October 25th and 26th (and maybe 27th) for games 3, 4 (and maybe 5) of the Series.

All three of Chicago's other "big four" teams have won championbships since the White Sox were last in a World Series: The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 1961, the Bears won the Super Bowl in 1986, and the Bulls won several NBA titles in the 1990's.

Although the White Sox still probably don't have the fan following of the Cubs, Fox could get a nationwide ratings boost for the Series if the White Sox go on to the win the Series and bring Chicago it's first World Series title since the Chisox won it in 1917 (of course, two years later, several members of that 1917 championship team would be caught-up in the "Black Sox" scandal where they accepted money to "throw" that year's Series).

They might because all of a sudden the news channels jumped on the Sox bandwagon. The Sox may be finally getting some national respect which may make the local news channels want to be there even more to get the local perspective on this. I think ESPN and the national guys are in shock though. This is not the celebrity or pretty team they like to showcase, but who cares about that!

Speaking of last night, shame on NBC 5 to drop the Sox coverage for the Bears game. I know the Bears won, but the Sox by far is the bigger historic story.

For obvious reasons, WGN was also the first to drop the Sox coverage. Maybe this will light a fire in the Tribune to do whatever it takes for the Cubs now to win.

Kudos to CBS 2 for going up until 12 am with the Sox coverage. By far they had the best local perspective and LA coverage which made for excellent tv.

CBS 2 and WSCR (both Viacom owned stations) by far have shown the most dedication to the Sox local coverage. Comments?

Not everybody is a Sox Fan so this continuous coverage may have a negative impact on many viewers (or listeners). A station could do well by keeping the coverage in perspective and let us know whether a bombing took place in Iraq, whether GM filed for bankruptcy, etc.

I was very interested in the Bears game and pleased to see MAQ provide me what I was looking for.

Let's face it folks, next year (once again) the Cubs will be playing to packed houses and the Sox will be playing in an empty parking lot. A station managing it's coverage costs should be mindful of this important fact. This is a Cubs town with a second team being kept here because it is subsidized by our taxes. This is not meant to create a Cubs vs. Sox dialogue, this is stating commonly known facts which must go into making business decisions.

Bartman did it to you in 2003. The Sox will do it to you again in 2005. Therefore, I understand your frustration.

CUBS SUCK.

Wow, a bitter Sox fan? Stop the presses; I've never met one before. The poster above you states facts in an unbiased manner and all you can come back with is "Cubs Suck." Had the Cubs made the Series in '03, I don't think I'd have wasted my time before the Series telling the Sox and their fans how much they suck. Of course, that's the difference between us. I don't care about your team. You can't stop caring about mine.
