Does it really matter? Online listening...??

The answer is: YES. That really matter in these days. A station without a livestream these days missed a lot of listeners who can't listen in offices or when they out of town.

Doubt it. Hot97 Already Evolved from Urban to Rhythmic Early this year. Billing(The Important #) is Also too high for a filp

But... unless a 100% simulcast, the numbers from the stream are not added to the on-air signal and do not help at all.

Simulcast means even the stopsets are 100% identical with the FM signal...

Not really. Out of town listeners dont count toward ratings anyway....and online listening is not counted in offices since as David already pointed out....streaming (in big markets) is almost always different due to agency spot concerns.

How would Arbitron know the difference if a person puts Hot 97 down in their diary if they don't mention how they heard it?
Online streaming is a great way to get office listeners. FM reception isn't too great in concrete buildings.

But from a marketing point of view it's very important for a radiostation to stream there station on the net. Also with the future in mind that you can listen online on mobile phones, wireless.

The diary has columns that indicate the source of listening. The PPM has separate encoding.

The stream IS working again (as of this writing-Friday nite 12/5/08 10pm ET-but always subject to change without notice) - it had been silent for about a month. The correct website address for the main page of U.S. Live Radio is:

http://www.usliveradio.com/

The direct link for the Hot 97 (WQHT-FM-97.1 New York, NY) audio stream is:

http://www.streamaudio.com/stations...n=WQHT_FM&Mac=No&OptIn=&Streamtype=&filename=

The direct link for New York's Kiss FM (WRKS-FM-98.7 New York, NY) audio stream is: (this is NOT working as of this writing)

http://www.streamaudio.com/stations...n=WRKS_FM&Mac=No&OptIn=&Streamtype=&filename=

If streaming wasn't considered important, why do about 99% of the stations in the top 50 markets now stream? Why have CBS Radio and Clear Channel invested in new platforms to deliver their streams?

I live in Boston, where we don't have an Urban AC. So I need to stream while listening at work. My first choice would be Kiss-FM, as I grew up on that station, listening since 1983.

Unfortunately, web listening isn't an option. So instead I listen to Groovin 1580 from Lexington KY, quite a great station believe it or not. I'll also listen to WYBC from New Haven, V103 from Chicago, and WDAS from Philly. Occasionally BLS. It's pathetic that Kiss FM, the # 1 Urban AC in the largest market, is so behind the times.

What is the big deal about Hot 97 streaming? It sounds like any other R&B radio station. Nothing special. It's not like the Hot 97 of the 1990s that broke new music and trends. Just go to the station's website and check out it's playlist. Power 92/Chicago, 102 Jamz/Greensboro and Hot 93.7/Hartford are better stations.

WRKS is good, but is afraid to touch new Urban AC music. It waits for WDAS-FM/Philadelphia and WHUR in Washington,DC to jump on songs before they decide to put them on. Sometimes KISS never catches up with those stations.

While online streaming may not count towards the Arbitron books it can still be profitable and beneficial for a station to stream. In order for listeners to stream they have to go to the website, which drives up the hits to the station's website, meaning more revenue from website ads.

Clear Channel stream sites are also linked with their social networking site, which also helped to drive up hits on the site. Also, CC is selling ad space and online only ads to play in place of the commercials heard on air. These ads are synced with the banner ads on the online streaming page to change when the commercial is played. Increasing the amount of money it can charge for ads since its a 2 for 1 deal. Banners and ad time.

Its taking time for the move to become extremely profitable, and obviously its no where near as profitable as the station itself, but it can still make for a pretty penny, not to mention it increases your brand awareness, which isn't a bad thing.
