Will iheartradio and pandora change radio the way we know it?

I've been using Pandora for a while now. It's on my iPhone and so I can listen to it anywhere I go. Now iHeartRadio is launching the same application as Pandora so you can create your own personalized radio station from a single song or artist.

Obviously Clear Channel will gather all of this information so the question must be asked...

Will this change radio as we know it and will it get better, worse, or stay the same?

For many years I've been getting my hair cut at the same place, by the owner of the salon.  I'm always curious to hear which radio station she has playing on each visit, and how loudly.  On my last visit I was surprised to hear "cocktail lounge" vocals playing, and very loudly.  Turns out it was Pandora and other services, programmed on-the-fly from her smartphone to play through some sort of audio wi-fi.  She was very enthused about it, and said, "sure changes the mood of the place, doesn't it?"   She was right, it did.  And it sounded very impressive.  And many of the customers were talking about the music -- far more than they usually do about the radio tunes.  Even the early-twenties receptionist was getting into the tunes, many of which (but by no mean all) were at least 40-50 years old.  The newer stuff was not hit-oriented, except for some "sophisticated" covers.

Over-the-air FM playing there year after year after year, and now this.  I doubt she's going to be going back to terrestrial stations, although it's certainly possible (maybe a mix?).  Doesn't really answer your question, but helps confirm that things are definitely changing.

...and as for whether the info gleaned from the "I Heart" App will be used to tweak terrestrial formats, it's hard to imagine that it won't, and I think that will probably be a good thing.  Great question.

It sure would be interesting if all of the data gathered would change the whole landscape of radio. I would assume that they would be able to format radio stations specifically designed for markets based on the percentage of what people listen to. I believe this would definitely prove whether or not consultants were worth a damn.

I am willing to bet that it does have an impact.. Clear Channel will use the data gathered via iHeart to help shape their formats in the various markets.. No question on that.. I would be really shocked if they didn't.

Not sure whether iHeartRadio was the best name. Almost sounds like a product endorsement rather than a slightly mysterious, "conjure your own image" name like Pandora or Spotify. Maybe it's just me, but the iHeart name also sounds like it would have less male appeal.

The name was chosen as their 'streaming' platform/ apps are called 'iHeartRadio' ... That's Clear Channel's brand for their online streaming presence (be a rebroadcast of a AM/FM or a HD2 channel or 'special' content) .. it's all branded under the iheartradio platform and that's how it's promoted on their AM/FM stations.

I have the iHeart app on my iPod touch primarily for the news/talk stations. With regard to music, most of what I listen to is on my Live 365 app.

Right, I was aware of that.  I've never been fully sold on it as the best name for its original purposes, but question it even more as it's extended into Pandora-type customization.  Seems too limiting with the word "radio" built into it -- and of course I'm a major fan of radio.  Also, the "heart" part seems like something that might not appeal to, say, a modern-day headbanger (though if BraveHEART were around today I admit he might be a headbanger).  Hopefully they've done some research that shows otherwise.
