Will Nashville Follow the Trend to Resurrect A Once Popular Format?

I never realy was a fan of KDF, before or after Rock 106. As far as I can remember they were always mellow to me, but like I said I did'nt listen to them much at all to know what they played. Yes, while Rock 106 was around they played a little more metal just to compete, but after 106 left the air, KDF went back to the Hall & Oats, REO Speedwagan soft rock format. Thats when I started building my Rock music cassette collection because no station was playing what i wanted to hear.

Lots of others did as well. KDF just got plain whimpie in the early 80's.

You're correct. As much as I was glad to see The Rock at 105.9 burst back on to the Nashville radio scene, that station was not close to having the depth in music selections.

I remember meeting Lisa Richards at one of those Elliston street fairs that Rock 106 did at that time. I heard she went to WMMR iFM n Philly. WMMR was a legendary progressive-album rocker in Philly. Not sure if Richards wound up there or not, but if she did she was among some radio legends such as Michale Tearson/

You guys probably already know but for the people who don't and are nashville radio fans from the past and the present, check out "Nash Radio", this site is cool, it has all kinds of pictures, airchecks and stories from Nashville DJ legends.

Nobody has really programmed "Rock" right in Nashville since Sudbrink killed Rock 106. I heard the same thing, that Lisa ended up at WMMR, but I can't confim that either.
Love the top of the hour id "CRANK IT UP"! That was a new on for the 70's.
When I was out of work in 1980-81, I did some Volunteer Work at WRVU 91.1 for a short time. Some of us Volunteer Jock, like myself, Tommy Franklin, Ketih Coes & Dave Parker tried to carry on the tradition of Rock 106 on 91 Rock, but the wierd Vandy students did everything they could to run us off, and they eventually did. Back then, they had a crapy 400 watt signal that hardly covered Davidson County.

Oh God do I remember that. At some point you and I probablly talked via the phone. I remember one "Jackass" by the name of C Otter that was a contentious little **** LOL Please tell me you and he were not freinds. LOL

You are correct about that. The airchecks that were submitted are awesome, not to mention the old stories told by Nashvile radio ledgends!

ScottWRMO, was it true that their were tensions between those that were into alternative-new wave and the jocks who liked the older traditional album rock material? I heard a story that fights would break out and also jocks locking jocks out of the booth. Was this true or is this just silly stories that were passed on about 91.1 WRVU?

When Rock 106 was on the air everybody i knew listened to them, and we could'nt believe on christmas eve of 1980 that they were playing christmas tunes. We assumed or was hoping it was just for the season but kinda figured it out after a few hours that KQB was over, man we were all so upset for weeks. And i liked that "crank it up" slogan too, that was cool. I cant believe the vandy students did'nt like that Rock 106 sound you guts were trying to bring back, i had listened to the VU station back then sometimes but i guess not at the time you were talking about, had I knew about it i would have been one of your biggest fans.
I wish i knew what ever became of the DJ's after they left. I think moby is doing country in Alabama, Dave Walton's still around but I don't believe he's behind the mic anymore, RJ is doing talk radio up north somewhere, but the rest of them is a mystery to me.

Swiss, did Lisa look good, i know she had a good looking voice. LOL

As I recall, 27 years later, she looked good. Long dark hair, unless I met another one of the female jocks at 106. I really only remember one female jock, wait, there was another that worked the weekends. Anyway, the lady I met looked good lol

deltas69, go to the yahoo home page, on the left side of the page click groups, and then enter nash radio at the top where it says "search for a group".

I am such an idiot ...i am a member there...brain locked mind for some reson didn't recognize the name..i don't deserve to drive the remote bus...... :-\

You may be thinking of Jessie Lang. She worked at KDF also. I thought that Lisa was better looking than Jessie. I was there for a short time as an intern during the Rock 106/15 WLAC-Top 40 days, just before the big format changes.

I was listening to The Rock this morning, and how whimpie John Boy and Billy sounds compaired to how Rock 106 was. When Clear Channel brought back the AOR format to 106, it kicked butt. Now, it sounds to me like a dried up old Classic (Top 40) Rock station. Rock 106 (WKQB) played the deep cuts from artist that normal AOR's wouldn't play. I hope somebody at CC is listening to us! Bring back the "CRANK IT UP" playlist.

Joe Elvis is a good jock, but the playlist of songs they force him to play is too much like Top 40, Bubble Gum, Rock. Gee Nahshville Radio Consultants, how many more times do we have to hear "Sweet Home Alabama" or "You shook me all night long"?

Another good example of a good AOR from the day was 98 "The Loop" WLUP-FM in Chicago.
When your in the mood for good AOR, you should hear Judas Priest, Iron Maden, Metal Church, Megadeath, Motorhead, Alice Cooper, etc.

Gee you guys have got old Scott really started, I miss the good ole "REAL" AOR days!

Oh, Deltas69 knows more than where Nash Radio is, I think he invented the site, is that right Pat? Hey Pat remembers how hard Rock 106 kicked!

The there were tensions between the "New Wave" and the "Traditional AOR Jocks" like myself. When there was a jock change, the listeners didn't know what they were to hear next, but in the with all the tensions in different music taste, we managed to maintain professionalism. I don't recall any fights between jocks. If it happen, I must have missed it.
During the hoildays, when the Vandy Students went home, AND WE RULED 91 ROCK! It was me, Jeff Porter, Britt Parker, Tommy Franklin, Eddie Anderson & Kevin Lowe.

In 1982, I managed to convinced Skip Sparkman, who was over the Vol State station at the time to atleast let us program WVCP Rock at night. Back then, it was Classical Music during the day and Jazz at night until 10 PM, then sign off. Skip allow me and a few others to start ROCK 88 on WVCP, Gallatin at night. We had Moby doing the WVCP, Legal I.D. "ROCK 88, WVCP Gallatin, CRANK IT UP!" Some of the 91 Rock jocks came to WVCP or were on both WVCP and WRVU. Skip was never fond of what we were doing, but he tolerated it. Dave Kennedy was PD and I was MD. Boy, during those early 80's days, we got may calls at WRVU and WVCP that KDF sucked and you guys ruled!

Today, that's why you turn it on 88.5 WVCP daytime and hear Top 40 Oldies, and 6 PM to 12 Mid, it Metal. Thier 6 PM to Midnight programming is not my cup of tea, not real AOR.

Was Delta one of the Rock soldiers @ Rock 106 also? I think they called the airstaff at Rock 106, Rock soldiers.

About the Lisa Richards thing. I was at the Eliston street fair where Rock 106 had set up a little booth. That station was doing some promotions that day. I remember seeing Moby and Lisa Richards. Someone said: Hey there is Lisa Richards. Since I was standing close by with bottle of Bud light firmly in my clutches, I said something really clever like: Hey Lisa LOL

As someone who was frustrated at the lack of Rock when Rock 106 pulled the plug, I listened to 91.1 rock. It all depended on who was on duty as to what you might hear. If one of you guys were on duty, the traditional AOR library was in use, but if one of the New wave jocks was on, the B-52s might playing..

Lisa was a kind person. She was my boss. She was gentle and had patience with me in Learning Radio 101. She could be a tuff teacher at times, but she ment well and wanted me to suceed in my chosen career. Her and Moby inereacted with our audience well. Everyone at Rock 106/WLAC back then was great. Nobody was treated as a stranger at our remotes and our audience was well involved!

If memory serves me correctly Deltas69 (Pat Julian) did work at Rock 106 at one time and was one of the Rock Soldiers. Within the short time, seems alot of us were at WQKB as it went Progressive Rock. I think Bill Buntin was involved in sales for a short time at Rock 106 as well during that period of time. I don't see how Dave Walton stayed after the format change and had to gag working "The Joy of Nashville"! Hunter Harvey played the New Wave stuff at Rock 106 and that's where I leaned who the Police and the B-52's were.

I was a angry young man when Rock 106 died and I still am!

Scott, did you use Scott as your on air name, or did you go by something else?
My friends and I was upset also about the switch, we couldnt believe it happened cause they were so popular. Of the 30 or 40 friends I hung with, all chose 106 over KDF. I heard the last song they played was something by Black Sabbath.
