Will the Huntsville/Gadsden area ever get a new Alternative/Modern rock station? What are your thoughts.

Will the Huntsville/Gadsden area ever get a new Alternative/Modern rock station? What are your thoughts.

For those of us that used to listen to WRAX and those who can't listen to 95.1 The Rocket for some reason or another, we haven't had a great rock station beside 106.1 WTAK (classic rock) for months now. I was wondering if we living in the WRAX lost coverage area will ever get another alternative rock or just modern rock station that was as strong as 107.7 The X. Should we give up and live off of IPods and cds or should we demand a good rock station like pre-2002 WRAX was. What are your thoughts?

Go ahead and demand. I'm sure they'll listen.

For Gadsden, tiny WSGN is the only chance I see. Does anyone know if SGN is still owned by Gadsden State or UAB? Huntsville's best shot is when WLAY moves in, they'd be nuts to go after DRM.

WSGN is still owned by Gadsden State and affiliated w/ WBHM and is still NPR/classical . . . Are you thinking of JSU's station, WLJS-91.9, which does play rock (even though they fill up a lot of time with NPR talk too for some reason)?

WKXX (Mix 102.9) is a pretty rock-leaning Hot AC in the area. I'm not sure if they always sounded that way or if they tweaked their playlist to snag displaced X listeners, I never bothered to listen to them before the X flipped. Seeing as how they're first adjacent to the similar WCKS-FM in Fruithurst (which is mostly a Carrollton, GA station and pays little attention to this side of the state line), I don't see why they don't go all the way to alternative. It wouldn't make sense for WCKS to do so because if you can get it, you can also probably get the Buzz from Atlanta even better.

I suspect our best bet is that as-yet-unassigned 100.1 non-comm class C allocation in Anniston. Hopefully, JSU would apply for it and drop their current tiny unexpandable allocation on 91.9 to get it. Otherwise, it'd just end up going to a religious group, and it's not like NE Alabama doesn't have more than enough of them on the dial already.

Clear Channel no longer owns WLAY, so the move in is off. (WLAY is UrbanRadio's strongest signal in the Shoals, and their biggest $$$$ maker too.)

About Huntsvegas/ Gadsden tire and rubber getting an Alternative station, don't hold your breath. ALternative/ Active Rock isn't doing very well as a format right now and NE Alabama has never even been able to support a translator, let alone a full power flamethrower.

Well, I e-mailed Clear Channel and Culubus (whatever the company that owns WZYP) about asking about having a alternative station last Monday and still no answer.

Your probably right RustyCarr. The stuff they play on Top 40 radio or whatever it's called besides Green Day is crap. Even then I am getting tire of Green Day and I am a fan!

I should just go after cds that I don't have in "Coyote J's top 100 Alternative Albums of the Century" which he has on his bio page on wrax's website. I been listen to 106.1 TAK for a while on and off and whenever they play rock that sounds too much like country I usually turn it off. I just can't stand country music since there is a bunch I can pick up. I really miss listening to Coyote J and his old Edge show. He had some great stuff on his old Edge show before it got dropped three or four years ago.
