Will The Sandbox take the Green Line across town to afternoons at WBCN?

With O&A out at WBCN and TnR expected to move to mornings, sources on the streets (read:Globe) have stated that FNX's 17 month old baby The Sandbox may fill the shoes in the afternoon slot. Making WBCN quite the power house.

Apparently, in recent weeks the two shows (TnR and TSNDBX) have traded on air jokes back and forth. Some good old fashioned cross town radio war fun...

...or a clever marketing plan to make the transition that much better.

I have also heard they might go all music no jock or move around A12 and Hardy.

Has anyone else heard anything about any of this?

I didn't hear that, but I heard that Rich from the T&R show has an impressive antenna... if you catch my drift. I also heard it is omni-directional and increases to a million eight kilowatts.

Myself, being a fan of both shows, I think that's not a bad idea, considering the huge void left in afternoons now in Boston. I know quite a few people who are both Sandbox and T&R listeners who are torn with who to listen to now. The Sandbox has a devout loyal audience that would definitely migrate with them if they switched to the afternoon drives on FNX, even if they didn't switch to BCN. Might be a smart move on their part to get T&R's afternoon listeners who are not fans of Hardy.

Correct me if I am wrong, but WFNX and The Sandbox have not been a rip-toaring success by any stretch of the imagination. Why would WBCN bother...?

Unless the 'first and only' poster who started this thread are trying to start or perpetuate a rumor?

Yeah but look at the station the Sandbox is on. Need I say more? Maybe they'll acquire an audience once they move to a station that has a bigger audience. My goodness, we give these guys so much attention while other stations get larger ratings (WILD, WNNW, WPLM).

The signal is an issue to consider, it's a moot point however. My inside source, there not here, says they have impressed a few people in the industry. Parts of the show will be heading to a much larger market once they ride out existing contract.

NWas, the stations I compared them to have weaker, or limited signals and get better ratings.

This thread is the first time I've seen The Sandbox even mentioned here, so they're not exactly setting the world on fire if even radio geeks don't discuss them.

Anyone notice the parallel between Nik Carter and Hardy being bumped for O&A (not in Hardy's case?) and then promoted back after O&A are gone?

The signal for WFNX just was upgraded....but the ratings for The Sandbox (and the station overall) went down even further.

While the FNX signal is not the best, there were times in the past when the programming was good enough that they did better than this.....even with the crappy signal.

As far as your "inside source"....I don't see anything that would give these guys a 'track record' to move up to a larger market.

I can't see them impressing anyone in the industry (esp. a larger market) when they have been floundering in the ratings, unable to attract an audience and unable to get any traction here.

Ahh! Look who has come back! CIAOey! There hasn't been an FNX post for a few months, and here he is, popping up with the same verbal repetitiveness as usual! I swear he must scour the boards waiting for the station or anyone who works there to be mentioned...then there he is! Hey Ms. Ciao I'd like to know what was the last morning show you hosted in a major former top 10 radio market? I'm almost positive what the answer would be...

Man, it has been so long since I have posted that I had to register b/c I couldn't remember my login info. I have missed you all. And Ciao is back! Hooray!

Anyway, let's get down to bidness.

Signal first. Was it upgraded? Yes. Is it still iffy in places? Yes.

Ratings next. I don't think we are "floundering". In fact we are up 28% in Persons 18-49AQH since 2006. I would give you more but I don't want to get yelled at.

As for a rumored move, I am just going to leave that untouched. Who doesn't love a good mystery?

Does someone owe me a steak?

This thread is so awful, I can't believe Rapking hasn't posted in it yet.

Did you guys know that 1.00 to 1.28 is a 28% increase? Math is fascinating stuff, huh?

Sounds like Algore's Fuzzy Math.... if I can take a line from Rush. I think it's obvious the thread was started as a joke. It's funny that people responded to it.

Hey Will, you have to start somewhere right? You aren't wasting that Math degree in radio are you?

I would be insulted by Mule's assertion if it probably wasn't true.

As long as enough people like the show to keep us employed I am not too worried what the naysayers think.

Here's something entertaining for your fuzzy math: Shortly before I wandered to sunny weather and Southern Comfort I joked that FNX has the best ratings-per-Watt of any station in Boston. I have to admit that for the little Class-A that could, it gets by and I think the local ownership helps them deal with lower ratings... as long as you pay the bills the rest is gravy I guess.

However titillating a Sandbox move up the dial sounds... I have a hard time thinking that CBS, who is slashing staff left-and-right, is going to be psyched about bringing on a 3-person Afternoon Show when it could manage with a 1-person Show in the afternoons (or, heaven-forbid, a 0-person show). Especially with PPM coming down the line for y'all soon enough... I'd be amazed if anyone does any additional big changes. big elaborate shows in Morning Drive is proving to be a weak use-of-resources in a PPM world.

Yes, and I heard that WUNR QUADRUPLED it's ratings...by going from a 0.1 to a 0.4!

Well, that's the question....and for how long?

How many bodies/salaries in that room in the morning? How long before they conclude it's costing too much for what it's delivering?

I wish you could take the green line across town between them. Having interned at both stations it's more like taking the commuter rail into the city, taking the green line across town, and then taking the 86 bus to Brighton.

This needs to get to four pages of nonsense, then The Hurricane and Swayze (Patrick) will take over!

ERP we need to hear from you on this, good to see everyone else still cares.

PPM will be a game changer for sure, but its main purpose will be to get rid of bad formats/shows faster and not to prolong the pain like WRKO is doing with Finneran.

CBS stations here have a lot of morning bodies in their studios. WZLX, WBCN, WODS, WBMX and WBZ are all cutting down everywhere else but mornings. There's a lot more cake to be made in AMD than any other daypart because of the potential audience size. Morning drives rest of the day. I think it's the right strategy. Unless Sandbox will replace K&M or Lander, I can't see them moving to CBS Radio.
