Any more mentions of "Spanish" as a format will bring David Eduardo into this thread... If DE arrives, he'll hijack the room, "enlightening" us all...
I promise I won’t tip D.E. off that you brought
him [and
Hispanic radio] up
here on the relatively-casual Nashville board
My exchanges with him haven’t been related to ethnic radio – they usually concern the viability of stations programming
“pre-modern music”. On that topic, he’s a
poster-child apologist for the corporate status quo – and he just
adores his
numbers and
Maximi$er PC! I can’t admit to putting up much of a debate with him on the fortunes of a station that hangs out exclusively in the late-50s to mid-60s, but [shocking as it may seem] he lightened-up a bit with me in a recent exchange regarding the direction of the reborn CBS-FM. I actually get the feeling that he “approves” despite his unwavering defense of
“Jack-in-the-Jukebox”. Those who don’t approve [of CBS-FM]; their number, ferocity, and rationale seems a bit curious to me. They despise the NY Jack and are smart-enough to understand the math [of time and business]; yet they direct invective at a barely-born station that
plays the hits [be-some by Bryan Adams and Journey] and
caters to their romantic impression of past presentation style with jingles ‘n jocks.
The Nashville Jack appears to be younger-targeted than in most markets – so is the very-successful
“Arch” in St. Louis [heavier 90s, a few well-scrutinized 00s, and even re-currents]. This remedies a major inconsistency that forces me to be a critic of that brand. My problem:
its “Gen-X” attitude and presentation genre superimposed upon a playlist appealing to last-half-30 and 40-somethings. The Jack attitude [
even jock-less] is fine given a bond with the appropriate hype-resistant demo. Just don’t throw Elton, The Doobies, and occasional Disco hits into that juke and present them with an
MTV “Real World” complexion... That’s far from "REAL" to a 45-year-old who is at the top of the audience “bell curve” for Jack in many markets.
I don’t see a compelling reason for the Nashville Jack to leave its box at this point, so which station in your city would be much-like CBS-FM at present [or headed in that direction]? Also, since I’m out of the loop in your market and detect a vibe on your board that WKDF [103.3] has seen finer days... What are they currently doing, and
what is the problem? I’m really clueless – and would like to come up to speed. I was a big fan back in the 80s and early-90s – even though the Boner Brothers had me laughing so hard in the car one morning on a visit that I almost drove off I-40 on that big hill heading down into town... There was just something gracefully-smarmy about waking up with a
Boner on the
Dick Broadcasting station 8)
