William Schallert, Father on ‘The Patty Duke Show’, Dies at 93

I thought Mr. Schallert had been long retired, but saw him about 2010 in a small part as the Mayor of Bon Temps in an episode of True Blood . He only had a few lines, and he was dressed in an old fashioned "southern gentleman" costume, with a cane. He looked well physically, but I did wonder if the cane was more than just a prop.

In the 70s and 80s, his voiceover work was almost as ubiquitous on TV and radio as Don La Fontaine's was in the 90s and early 00s.

Schallert was also the President of the Screen Actors' Guild for one, possibly two terms.

Just checked good ol' IMDB...His last credit was just 2 years ago, on "2 Broke Girls". He also did a few "Perry Mason" episodes, but who didn't? And maybe his best known commercial VO was as Milton The Toaster in the old Pop-Tarts spots.

the ultimate dad

I thought of him as the ultimate dad. He played Patty Duke's father, Nancy Drew's father (Pamela Sue Martin in Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries) and Gidget's father (Caryn Richman in The New Gidget).
