This station had one single owner it's entire life. They never modernized into the 21st century (one of the last to still use carts). No website or social media ever, no FM translator. I last visited them in 2008, and was surprised by how old school they were. BTW, they were full service Country, in English and Navajo.

I've been through Winslow a few times during my younger years. This is upper plateau, high desert, whatever you want to call it. The last time I was in the town was sometime in the early 1980s. At that time, the two strongest AM stations were KINO (now gone) and Holbrook's KDJI at 1270 kHz, about 30 miles northeast. Flagstaff's KAFF and then-KCLS also made good penetration on AM as well as Show Low's KVWM. On FM, the three Flagstaff frequencies (88.7, 92.9, and 93.9) came in well there. Since I visited the town, Window Rock's KTNN has come on the air at 660 kHz with a good signal both day and night; and, much more recently, AFR has put in a station at 91.3 mHz (KAWN). What is now KOAI at 95.1 FM started out being licensed to Winslow on the same frequency in the early 2000s with a classic hits format (and a transmitter which I believe was closer to Flagstaff than to Winslow) but soon moved down toCrown King to be a Phoenix rimshot. (Flagstaff's 97.5 station also moved to Crown King around the same time.) Today, other than the religiously-affiliated KAWN and a handful of other religious transmitters, all of the FM stations you can receive from Winslow appear to be the 100kW Flagstaff stations with transmitters near Munds Park--88.7, 92.9, 93.9, 102.9, and 107.5.

RIP KINO!

An article about the owner from August 2022...the text indicates that he had modernized the station somewhat:

Englehardt signed the exhibit for the cancellation request, so one presumes he's alive.

Great story, thanks! For a small town, the loss of KINO will definitely be felt. It's sad to see local, dedicated, life long community minded broadcasters disappear. There is nothing left like this on the radio dial in Northern Arizona. Glad that Loy is still around, just time to hang it up.

I don't see where it had one owner. According to records the station signed on in 1952, was sold in 1963, and then Engelhardt acquired it in 1977.

The did have social media with a Facebook page that was abandoned in 2019 - KINO RADIO 1230 AM

I had to resort to Wikipedia, so I don't how accurate this is

KINO started in 1963, after being off the air for three years. Previously, it was KVNC at 1010 AM. Carleton W. Morris was the owner from 1963 to 1977. And Loy purchased it in 1977.

So, my apologies, I had forgotten about the Morris ownership. But I'm only counting the KINO years for station history...I was going by faulty memory.
