With Maimi losing its smooth jazz station on Chirstmas mourning how safe is KTWV

Good line! I'm still laughing.

Happy new year!

KTWV will stay the course for 2009. I like DE's argument that they can't afford to change just yet.
I agree.

KLSX will switch to All News, KNX-FM, simulcasting the AM. They need the lower demos; can't afford not to change.
I don't know that CBS has the same confidance in KNX as they do say KCBS-AM. I do agree that the contracts with the weekday shows is the only thing keeping the company's last FM talker afloat. I think KNX will stay where it is for now on the FM side.

KFWB will switch to Spanish language News/Talk/Sports.
With what?? I suppose they could add on CNN En Espanol, but who is there on the talk side they could bring on board. And everything on the sports side is already taken by other L.A. outlets. An uphill and very costly start-up any way you look at it. Not in this economy.

KMVN will switch to a pop-leaning CHR, musically in between KIIS and KBIG.
Hasn't it already??

Indie will switch to Spanish language CHR, simulcasting KSSE.
Yep.....this is the year that Indie goes away! Just like last year.....and the year before that, and the year before that and.....

The Sound will evolve into a more mainstream Rock to pick up more cume.
Possibly.

Re: KLSX. Interesting point you make about CBS' confidence in KNX vs. KCBS. You are probably correct about that. Nevertheless, I think they have the first chance in LA to jump on the FM News or News/Talk bandwagon (vs. the less newsy "Hot" Talk format that was already on FM) and will probably jump on it before Clear Channel does it with KFI.

Re: KFWB. I must admit that I have not thought through "how" KFWB would go Spanish language News/Talk/Sports. I just see more opportunity for Spanish than I do English language formats in LA. Plus, CBS is not a big Spanish language player nationwide but it is when it comes to N/T/S. So, I can imagine some strategic planning executive at CBS urging the rest of the company to expand its N/T/S expertise in that direction.

Re: KMVN. I think it has already become more pop-leaning (vs. rhythmic) but it still emphasizes oldies, not current hits. I think it will keep evolving in 2009 and eventually become a true CHR-Pop station.

Re: Indie. That is funny. Perhaps Indie will live on forever despite everyone's predictions.

Can you give a few examples of what you mean by "mainstream"? If you mean classic rock-similar like KLOS they've done that and their #s did not improve. Now they have cut back somewhat on the classic rock cuts and are playing a few more AAA-type tracks and some lesser heard classic rock but they still play too few currents (when compared with other big city stations in the genre like KINK-FM, WXRT, and now even KPRI!!) and also too few female singer/songwriters/rockers.

If The Sound "evolves" in the direction you are predicting they are going to be even more boring and safe if that's possible!

Happy New Year!! 8)

What I had in mind is an adult-oriented rock format such as KTYD/Santa Barbara. It promotes itself as "World Class" or "Quality" Rock, as do many AAA's, but it also gets labeled as Classic Rock or just plain Rock by the trades. It balances the need for wider appeal with the art of maintaining an interesting mix of music, especially in the evenings. It is also highly rated.

Santa Barbara is not Los Angeles. It's more like San Francisco. We're worlds apart (look at the 2008 November election results to see that). Nothing remotely like AAA will ever work in Los Angeles. PERIOD. We've gone down this road enough times to know that is not a format Los Angeles will ever support.

Los Angeles needs KFI style talk and sports FM's. News, only if it is from an established player, CBS, also.
