With the looming NBA and NFL lockouts fast approaching, Can all 5 survive?

Since it looks as though the NBA lockout is a definite, and the NFL can't seem to make headway in their negotiations with the Player's Association either, what would or could happen to the 5 Houston sports stations if neither pro league plays ball? Without the Texans and Rockets playing next season where would these stations find material to fill the day and "move the needles"? Lockout talk for both leagues can only fill so much time, and then where do they go? With the Astros in the situation they are in they can't be the crutch for this market. College sports? There's not that big of a following in this town for anything other than football, and even college football in this city is lukewarm at best. So what do 610, 790, 1180, 1560, and 97.5 do to fill time with only one major league franchise in town actually playing the game?

Well, listen right now. We're out of football season, March Madness hasn't fired up yet, the Rockets suck, and the Astros suck, but there is some good talk radio on some of the sports stations. Good hosts can make you not realize you're in the doldrums. The local and national shows that give you something to talk about when there's few (if any) games going on will thrive. The shows that have no idea what to talk about when there's no game to recap will struggle.

I see what you are saying, but sports talk about bad teams still beats sports talk when there are almost no sporting events to talk about. This is what I'm saying. Sure, they all survive now because they have new material every day. The local teams may suck, but at least there are games being played. That gives the opportunity for listeners to talk about developments that don't necessarily involve the hometown squad but still have value as part of the show. Take away all the games from every market in two of the three major U.S. sports and I don't see how you survive, especially in a market like this when you're competing as one of four English sports stations targetting an already limited amount of listeners.

The local teams sucking are great fodder for local sports talk. A lockout is just more news to talk about. I echo johndavis. It's the hosts that can make or break it. I find myself moving constantly between the 3 am's. 1560 made some great programming moves to add more to give them more than just John & Lance. The Game's lack of a local pro sports franchise will always handicap them. Vandermere & Lopez seem to be finally clicking in the am for 610. Rich Lord and his new partner have seemed to have branched out more into the Howard Stern vein, perhaps to draw in the younger demos. Barry Warner and his partner are very good at night giving 610 a firm lineup in the face of both an NFL and NBA work stoppage. And of course Jim Rome holds their midday audience. I see 610 as the strongest of them all. The one I believe in trouble is 790. Outside of Charlie Palillo you have ask.....who???? Matt & Adam in the morning seem to be copying every bit John & Lance have done and continue to do. Their lack of creativity and originality is embarrassing and when Matt Jackson shoots from the hip his inexperience and very low level of knowledge come through loud and not so proud. Matt Thomas is a snoozer and is in that tough slot against Rome and Rush. It's a good thing he hawks everything Clear Channel sells. At least he has work where others will hear him, even if he is selling weight loss. If 740 didn't have the Astros 790 would be in another format. If Pallillo ever bolts the station is toast as a sports format. Hell, it might be toast anyway in the near future. I look at the numbers from time to time and see lots of strenght on espn, but I never venture to the FM dial to really make a comment, but these comments are only my opinion.

Yeah...we'll get right on that as soon as San Antonio recognizes there are TWO NFL franchises in Texas.
