WIXI 1360 goes from black music to white noise

…as in, dead air. A friend tipped me off to their lack of programming. Apparently it's been going on for several weeks. Friend contacted someone at WJLD and WIXI was off within a few hours, but it's back on with dead air again as of yesterday.

I can't imagine there are many potential listeners in the Jasper area for Richardson's R&B programming and Birmingham-centric talk programming, so if there's an issue getting the audio to Jasper from Fairfield, seems like it'd be more cost effective to just shut the transmitter off until the issue is fixed.

It's a shame they've run into trouble; I got to hear the station before it was sold, back when it was still bluegrass and Americana type music and it sounded really, really good. And I've heard from several people who hear it fairly clearly from east Birmingham all the way to Florence. Not bad for a high bander with 12 kW.

Fair assessment. I never could quite understand why they went the programming route they went, unless WJLD doesn't cover Adamsville and Forestdale very well.

I've always thought it was odd that Richardson wound up with/wanted WIXI, but then again, he was wanting to sell AM 1220 in the transaction, because the folks who owned WIXI at the time wanted WAYE. Still, it makes you wonder what possible advantage it could be for Richardson to own a station 35-40 miles NW of Birmingham. That 12 kw on WIXI drops down to a mere 42 watts at night, so if the purpose behind simulcasting WJLD with WIXI is to fill in coverage in Adamsville, Graysville, etc, it would only be useful during the daytime hours. At night, that 42 watts wouldn't probably make it out of Jasper. The only idea I have ever come up with as to why Richardson might have wanted WIXI was to possibly to move the station to Birmingham. Since WIXI's frequency at 1360 is only 40 khz away from WENN and WJLD, and, along with the fact that WBYE in Calera is no longer broadcasting on the adjacent channel of 1370, it might be possible to move WIXI to Birmingham (interestingly enough, if that ever happened, it would not be the first time the WIXI calls have been in Birmingham; they were originally on AM 1480 in Irondale, which is now WQOH). However, would the time and expense of applying to move the station to Birmingham be worth the effort, since AM radio these days isn't the medium of choice for most listeners?

To move an AM is a legal, financial, and technical nightmare. That is why you see so many cheap ones out there that say site not included.

A good example was an AM in Mississippi a few years back 25K. You needed to find a site.

AM Revitalization will allow for some higher power levels, and possible options to expand the AM footprint for a translator.
