WJAR News Anchor Doug White Has Died (1944-2006)

WTNH-TV (ABC) channel 8 of New Haven has done those awards for years.

>>It would be nice for WJAR/NBC/Rhode Islanders to re-name a journalism program or building after Doug White.<<

I think that that would be an excellent idea. No question that Doug was a fine Rhode Island journalist who always set high standards both on the air and in the field. His colleagues at WJAR-TV are of the utmost quality too in terms of journalistic integrity and honesty. I'm sure that Doug was an excellent mentor to all of them. Eventhough I am not a Rhode Islander, I watched the three Providence stations over the years here in the Boston area since 1966. WJAR, since the Outlet days to the present, has been a class-act for as long as I can remember.

I hope that WJAR, NBC and some Rhode Islanders will re-name a journalism program or building after Doug White. That would be the right thing to do.

That's all fine and Dandy but everyone is forgeting about Art Lake. Art worked for WJAR before there was Television. He is still alive and has literly out lived everyone including Walter Cryans first retirement.

23 Kenney Lane should be named The Doug White, Art Lake Television Broadcast Center or "The White Lake boadcast facility".

Be assured NOBODY will forget Art Lake! NO WAY! He is "Mr. Channel 10" himself, and has been part of WJAR-TV since its' inception in 1949, and with WJAR radio (now WHJJ) many years earlier. There is NO doubt that Art will get the honor that is due him. There is NO mistaking that unique "New England tinged" voice of WJAR, Art Lake.

I'm sure that someone at WJAR reads this board regularly and will take notice of your idea. Excellent.

Art Lake is Rhode Island broadcast history -- no doubt. While Doug White will be remembered for his news acumen, Art Lake represents seven decades of broadcast history. I always chuckle when I think of Art Lake. I remember watching him in the early 80's and thinking that he must be close to retirement age. Little did I know that he would still be doing the weather nearly 2 decades later.

Does anyone have an update on Art's condition? He must be in poor health since we haven't heard very much.

He's in such poor health that I already thought he had died. Thank you for those who set me straight. It must have been a nightmare that I had...... but I could still swear that I saw reports earlier this year that Art had passed away. To make matters worse I thought I had seen these reports come directly from WJAR. WOW....... talk about a nightmare that seemed real!

Well..... I'm sure glad that he's still around. But people are saying that he's in a nursing home. Sad to say that once you are in a nursing home at 80 plus years of age you typically don't rebound to better health and return to work. I think it's safe to say that we will never see Art Lake again.

I suggest that they rename WJAR's building and call it the "White/Lake Broadcast Center" as well. Catchy title which definitely pays respect to two of the Best talents that station has ever had.

What if they rename the street after one person and the building after another so each can have their own "memorial"?
