WJJZ 97.5 returns...sort of...as a web radio channel

Just received this e-mail from Greater Media.

Interesting development - kudos to GM for trying to leverage the brand.

"Philadelphia Smooth Jazz Fans Have a New Home at PhillySmoothJazz.com!!!

"Greater Media is pleased to announce to you first that today we have officially partnered with AccuRadio to produce PhillySmoothJazz.com, a unique new online radio station which provides Philadelphia's dedicated jazz and R&B fans with a place to hear all of your favorite Smooth Jazz artists.

"PhillySmoothJazz.com is the world's first multichannel Smooth Jazz radio station, offering six different channels of Smooth Jazz. These options include a main channel, plus five additional channels: Smooth Piano Jazz, Smooth Guitarists, Smooth Saxophones, Smooth Jazz Vocals, and Smooth Instrumentals. Once you launch a channel, you can personalize it to your individual tastes, including skipping songs you don't like, or even "deselecting" artists you don't want to hear. It's a brand-new Smooth Jazz experience, and you can try it today at PhillySmoothJazz.com"

Six channels... one per listener! ;D

It kinda freaks me out when I receive e-mails from dead people. This one reminded me of an email from Sunny 104.5 that I came across long after its demise.

The subject line of the e-mail was deceptive at best! Internet stations are obviously not specific to any particular market. And really, who's gonna be listening? Really?

clear channel is doing the same "brilliant" idea in allentown. they flipped the AM oldies station WKAP 1470 AM and made a big deal with a lot of fanfare about bringing online a web oldies station that i'm sure gets 2 listeners. web radio is nice, but it's not really practical yet.

Depends on what "practical" means. It is by no means the "one-to-many" concept that conventional broadcasting represents.

However, as a music discovery tool, it has interesting potential. I view this new "AccuRadio" service much as I view Pandora.

Web radio has merit for broadcasters seeking to reach niche audiences -- those that used to use shortwave to reach their audience. OK, stop laughing.
