WJLL-AM NIAGARA FALLS, NY License renewal grant rescinded

AM STATION APPLICATIONS FOR RENEWAL APPLICATION GRANT RESCINDED
---------------------------------------------------------------

NY BR-20140131ACG WJJL 39517 M. J. PHILLIPS COMMUNICATIONS, INC. Renewal of License.
E 1440 KHZ NIAGARA FALLS, NY
License renewal grant rescinded on 07/19/2017.

There is no reason showing on the FCC Media Bureau web site yet as to why they did this.

I've asked two knowledgeable people in the business about this and they have different opinions. The first thought the notice to be incorrect. The second offered that the notice is accurate and reflects the FCCs approach to licensees that do not pay the fines charged against them. IIRC, WJJL has twice been fined by the FCC for various violations of the rules, so it may be that the station's owners ignored the FCC. In a way this latest action is sad because WJJL has (perhaps had is a better word) a history of serving Niagara Falls, and producing some fine local air talent. If the FCC has in fact rescinded the license renewal as part of a death sentence, it could mean the 1440 frequency is deleted. If the frequency isn't deleted, it could present an opportunity for a local group or an established owner such as Dick Green to add another station.
