WJZY & WMYT-TV sold to the Fox TV Group...

Why should I have to look up what network I'm watching? NBC Charlotte and Fox Charlotte tell me!

Watching the news on Channel 9 or watching the news on NBC Charlotte. News is news. The name doesn't matter with news.

"Fox Charlotte" doesn't tell you that anymore. Hence, they are screwed.

If they had branded like, for instance KTVU (also a Fox affiliate) they wouldn't be scrambling so bad right now to find a branding and save the news department.

Fox Charlotte's news is #1 at 10pm. Obviously their branding wasn't a problem. Your arguement is basically, if they didn't call themselves Fox Charlotte, they wouldn't have to change their name? Changing their name is the least of their worries, trust me!

I understand what you're saying. You just don't really have a good arguement, and obviously haven't thought this through. WCCB won't have enough revenue to continue their news department so it really doesn't matter.

I can think of 2 stations that lost their affiliations and actually beefed up their news department to make a difference. They were WSVN Miami and the station that had been NBC in San Francisco. They did just fine. I say wait and see...

Keep in mind Miami and The Bay Area of California are much larger than Charlotte in population, so they have more news to cover, that doesn't mean WCCB can't do well with more newscast, they could, but won't.

WJXT in Jacksonville, FL also lost their affiliation (CBS) and continued as a news oriented station. Them and KRON4 (the San Fran station) certainly lost quite a bit but did manage to stay afloat as independents, even during the recession. Another example is channel 6 in San Diego.

WSVN didn't lose anything. They are still a Fox affiliate.

... So you have to wonder how long before local TV stations are history?

About as soon as no one is interested in what the weather is going to be.

For instance, Channel 12 in New Bern. I'll bet you people in the area that couldn't name anyone else on their air staff to save their souls know the name "Skip Waters".

Ah go back further my friend, WSVN had been NBC and lost the affiliation. They were an independent for awhile before Fox came along.

Not commenting on the journalism content, but Channel 9 Eyewitness News does a much better job of branding their product for WSOC than whatever they are calling the news on NBC Charlotte these days. They had done a pretty decent job of rebranding as Newschannel 36, only to abruptly dispose of it just a few years later. And since I use an antenna, the basic function of the TV is associated with tuning into a certain channel number that identifies the station you are viewing. And based upon what Fox does in other markets, FOX Charlotte will be dropped and the new station will be FOX-46.

Channel 9 just has a better news product. The branding has nothing to do with it. With calling it NewsChannel 36, you're confusing those who have cable and those looking for NBC. You can't associate it with a channel number, when you have several different channel numbers! You could also be picking up a station from another market. I can get channel 7 from South Carolina. That's why the "Charlotte" helps. There hasn't been a valid point to dispute anything I'm saying. Obviously, I'm right!

Many television stations are getting away from idenifying themselves as a channel number, mainly because of cable, even though some leave the channel position on the screen like WSOC, others prefer to use call letters, your station ID is important to the viewers.

I think that when WCNC rebranded as channel 6, at the time it was a stroke of genius. They worked with all the cable companies in the coverage area and made deals to have their signal put on channel 6 everywhere, then they promoted it heavily on the air.

At the time they made that move, Directv and Dish were nowhere as prominent as they are now, in fact I think that you couldn't get locals on either service at that time.

Prior to making that move, most cable systems had WBTV on Channel 3 and WSOC on Channel 9, WCCB and WCNC/WPCQ were all over the place depending on which town you were in, so this move got them consistency in most areas and since more people got them on Cable than over the air it was a good move - at the time.

Now it is not as big a deal with more people using satellite, and the digital conversion too.

In Charlotte on the basic tier WBTV has always been on 2 and WSOC on 4. Now with the HD tier WBTV is 1105 and WSOC is on 1110 which is just so wrong! ;D
