WJZY & WMYT-TV sold to the Fox TV Group...

Molly Grantham announced Friday on her Facebook page that the WBTV 10:00 newscast is moving back to WJZY the day of the switch to Fox, July 1. Pretty much a given that was going to happen. It will remain on WBTV till WJZY launches its own newscasts in Winter 2014. I imagine they will want to start it no later than Super Bowl Sunday. That would definitely be the perfect night to launch it.
I would guess when WJZY launches its own newscast that will be the end of WBTV News at 10. No other station for it to move to. And no longer a need.

Yeah three 10:00 newscasts in Charlotte is enough. Only way WBTV has a shot at another 10:00 news is if WCCB shuts down their news department in the future but I don't see them wanting to be on another CW station after they moved it from WJZY to WMYT last year. Plus it would get pounded by WSOC on WAXN and eventually WJZY.

I get a strong signal from WJZY here in GVL, SC some 75 miles away. So I am happy to see them change to FOX, as I am sure they will be more impressive than WHNS-21 FOX Carolina. I only get WCCB sometimes at night.

Geoff Roth, a news executive with the Fox-owned station in Houston, will lead the development of a news operation for WJZY (Channel 46), which will begin carrying Fox programming Monday, July 1st.
"Geoff is a solid journalist and news leader with a proven track record of innovation in news gathering and content presentation," said WJZY's general manager, Karen Adams, in making the announcement Tuesday. "Geoff is the perfect choice to lead FOX 46 Carolinas News."

Not surprising, since WCCB's tower is farther east. That doesn't help me much, as one of my antennas won't pick it up any more. The other one does and maybe one day I'll remember to watch the .3 channel. But my cable rarely goes out.

WJZY is now FOX-46 Carolinas. Picture quality is improved as they have dropped 46.3 and 46.4. Now just 46.1 FOX HD channel and 46.2 Antenna TV. ThisTV has moved to WMYT 55.2 and also has better pic quality. WBTV News at 10 is now airing on 46.1 until FOX begins their own local news program next year. Still waiting to see if they eventually replace Ant TV or This with FOX owned Movies! network as contracts expire.

I expect "This TV" will wind up on WBTV, since some of their Raycom Media stations carry this, as for "Antenna TV", maybe WAXN Channel 64?, or it may stay where it is, we shall see soon.

Well Bounce is already on 3.2, it is on most if not all Raycom stations and don't think they'd add a 3.3. It could replace that useless "Descriptive Video Service" on 18.2 or end up on WAXN, can't believe they haven't picked up something to put on a channel 64.2.

This TV was previously on WBTV for a while before they picked up Bounce.

Article mostly about Raycom and Dish coming to an agreement. But it also says WAXN has passed WCCB at 10. It hasn't taken long for the CW affiliation to hurt WCCB. So far WCCB has been hurt by losing Fox more than WJZY has been helped by getting it, but the launch of WJZY's news in January (with new Fox shows leading into it) will likely make WJZY a powerhouse at 10.

As for WCCB I could see WBTV producing news for them in the future (or WCNC if Gannett upgrades them to HD). Just don't know if their news department is going to be around in a year or so.

WCCB lost their FOX affiliation, and lead anchors Morgan Fogarty and Israel Balderas. And their longtime news director. Plus their new Edge hosts have not yet attracted an audience. So a slip in the ratings is not surprising. But they may be able to rebound in the months ahead. But the real threat will be when FOX-46 begins their own strong newscast on WJZY next year. Maybe it is time for Mark Mathis to return to WCCB. I would definitely tune in.

They've had all this loud music to promote the switch. And now ironically, they advertise how to connect with them through social media with silly big band music.

Now the music reaches ME ... but the message does not.

I get WCCB sometimes at night, but their signal doesn't really reach past Spartanburg. And I am in Greenville, SC. At one time they had plans to put a translator on Crowder's Mtn. like WSOC, but for some reason those plans never materialized. But I do get WJZY FOX-46 with a very strong full strength signal at my location, as well as sister station WMYT-55. Along with WBTV-3 and WCNC-36. And for some reason, I get WSOC 9.1 much more reliably in the evenings and overnight than I do WCCB-18. And the 9.5 translator often comes in as well.

WCCB is in what the Charlotte Locals call "Center City, Charlotte". Meaning its Transmitter & Antenna are roughly 14 -to- 18 miles further away than the Towers in Dallas, NC. That is probably why you have trouble getting them down in G'Ville, SC. Those miles (plus a Antenna Height Factor) make a big difference. Steve.

Yes I get all of the Charlotte signals from Dallas very well. In Greenville, SC. I just wish WSOC and WCCB had relocated their antennas to that area during the digital transition. Those taller towers reach an overall wider coverage area. Which is why WCNC relocated there back in the 80s. And the WSOC translator tower on Crowder's Mtn is just too low power to reach as far. If WBTV and WSOC were to hypothetically share a Dallas tower, they could split the cost of operations and reduce expenses. Broadcasters do this in other markets.

But why would Raycomm, owners of WBTV, want to give away the $$$ they are making by renting out tower space to WLNK and WOSF FM transmitters, not to mention anything they might be getting from space rental to communications providers? WBTV didn't build their "tall tower" to share anything with their TV competitors.

Later . . . .

Actually Matt...It is my understanding that the original idea was to lease space on the Bob Friday Rd tower to other TV stations. That is part of the reason the transmitter building is shaped the way it is. They were going to build triangle shaped buildings all around the tower.

They have 'unloaded' all of the old channel 3 rigid line and the batwing antenna off the tower. I guess there could be room to add one or more TV antennas there without moving 107.9 or 105.3. Plus with the possible repacking of the band multiplexing might be an option.

Other than WBT and WBTV's two-way repeaters and STL/TSL gear there is no communication equipment on the tower.

That being said WSOC-TV and WCCB own their own towers so they are paying no lease. Their only cost is maintenance and taxes.

I got a tour of that site shortly after it was built. I vaguely recall the question being asked as to why the odd-shaped building and the answer was future tenants could build adjacent to the existing building and be able to use stock 30- or 60- degree coax elbows from the main feedline entrance so the rigid line could go perpendicular through the wall to their room. They also got the power company to bring the power in from two different directions (from two different substations I assume) for redundancy. They also had a scale model of the tower in the main lobby back at the studio.

It's not really in the city. When I would go home on Friday or return to UNCC each Sunday, there were these three towers that I would pass. I passed very close to one fo the three. There are four now.
