So has Clear Channel's WKIP flip to news talk been a regret? It's just hard to believe how such a small-power station could make any impact.
Clear Channel began simulcasting the "News Talk 1450 WKIP" feed on WELG a few months ago -- but that made little sense either.
It's been an interesting follow for me -- though I still can't understand either move. The flips might have been useful if a local host was hired; we all know, however, that there would be no pay for that. But without a local host -- how could these stations ever dream of even becoming profitable? For goodness sake, KIP's programming schedule shuts down at night (transmitter interference).
The Hudson Valley could definitely use a talk station -- even in these poor times, I predict it would be very profitable. Unfortunately, there are no AM stations (now) to give full coverage to the Hudson Valley.
WHUD and WSPK are the two Hudson Valley megas -- everyone knows them in all the counties; they're on in all the bagel shops and in every non-radio head's car. Imagine if there were a news and talk station with a similar reach: it would be profitable and influential.
WKIP/WELG do not even come close.
