WKSW FM Flips 98.5 KISSFM To Classic Rock 98.5

Sad to see one of the good guys in Top 40 here in the state of TN going under. Not a good sign for the future of Contemporary Hit Radio in Middle TN if 107.5 The River is the lone wolf standing. Proving once again that Radio only works for 50-60 year olds so we must cater to their needs with their music.

KISS FM Gives Way to Classic Rock in Cookeville
Definitely not debating-but I believe it has slightly more to do with the quality and season of CHR/Top 40 more than the age bracket. Yes, that has some to do with it, but I believe if the music was more generally accepted today, perhaps there would have been no change-but either way, I hope it's a great change for them! Again, not debating, just jumping in! Thank you!

Cookvagas might be over radioed, but you have realize that Tennessee Tech is a "suitcase college" so the advertising is most likely aimed at folks who live there full time, not just weekdays. I feel they do have enough Country Stations. I used to work at the old WPTN (now WGSQ) when they were simulcasting Country on AM 1550 (daytime) and 94.3. We signed off at 10 PM (it's been 40 plus years it might have been 11) I did do an Oldies show on Sunday nights after the preachers quit at 6pm. It was surprisingly well received and actually had sponcers. I can only guess that's why WPTN AM now on 780 with it's FM translator is Oldies now.

I remember listening to WGSQ around 1987 wanting to see if they played Steve Earle or Foster & Lloyd or something and maybe sitting through what seemed like a 10 minute commercial break. Is that possible?

I don’t see anyone in Cookeville picking up the Top-40/CHR mantle, EVER!

I'm not sure. I left in 1997, I think it is part of the same group that owns 106.1 which at the time was Kicks 106 I believe. Long time ago. I know they sold shortly after I left.

Cookeville no longer has a true CHR, and no stations for the Urban audience!-
According to the most recent census estimation, Putnam County has 79,800 folks. There are an estimated 1,900 people who identify as Black. That is 2.4%. I doubt a commercial station would be able to sell enough commercials to pay the power bill much less have any air staff.

Also with the shameful way Black Folks have been treated in the past in the Upper Cumberland, I seriously doubt that percentage will ever increase.

IMHO without Tennessee Tech, Cookeville would be another Crossville.

True. But regardless CHR is dead!

There is one Urban station serving Cookeville proper (well, classic hip hop to be more exact): WKXD 106.9 (Kicks Country) has its HD2 branded as 93.3 The Dawg, airing songs that would have been on WQQK (92Q) in the 1980s and 1990s and songs that would have been on WUBT (101.1 The Beat) in the early 2000s.

Wow. Well, that is part of the world...
IMHO a bad part of the world. Crossville was and still is considered a "sundown town". Unfortunately it's still a thing. There are websites warning black truckdrivers to not be caught in those towns after sunset.

According to the websites: increased chances of going missing if you're black.
