WKXY - The Cat's Out of the Bag

WKXY will be country, starting Christmas Day at 12 Noon. The station will be known as "KIX-92.1." Morning man Jim Gregory will be teamed with a female co-host. The fat guys at Radio Cleveland are already in crisis mode. They haven't had any competition in 5 years.

Streaming online at www.kix921.com (requires WinAmp).

Got to hear some of the station early this morning while out in the delta - it sounds good, Larry! I'm not a country person but I enjoyed the songs played. Much more upbeat and entertaining than the other fuzzy stations on the dial.

I also wanna say I was pleasantly surprised while listening, to see the station uses RDS (although it was stuck on an old song title & artist with jumbled characters when I saw the display). And imagine my surprise when I got into Cleveland proper and my radio went *poof* and magically changed over to 102.7 - where Kix 92.1 is apparently rebroadcasting on a translator. Which, by the way, sounded even better "sound wise" than the main station!

Just past the community of Pace on MS-8, *poof* went the radio back to 92.1 when the translator got weak. How cool is that?

I know it makes me an übernerd for even bringing it up, but I thought it was kinda neat for a lil' delta station to be so... Technologically advanced. :D

Zach - we're not doing titles/artists just yet. Maybe you were seeing something from 92.1 in Oxford. But it's good to know the 92.1/102.7 switching thing works. I've never acually seen that in opreration. Kudos to Paul Burt for making it work!

It's a great feature and I wish more stations (or in this case, networks) used the feature. I think MPB still does but I never noticed a change while I was out the other day.

Whatever data was on the display, it was "scrolling" the song title and artist and then Kix 92.1 (I think). Guess I'll have to go back to Cleveland and check again sometime. ;) I'm pretty sure 92.1 in Oxford isn't doing RDS, but then I never listen to them so I don't really know.

Zach, on my last drive up there, I also mistakenly thought those were song titles, and I'm the guy who installed the RDS on Kix, HAH!

I think we were both seeing their static-scroll promoting Jim Gregory. It was also early in the morning when I was up there last week, and there was a lot of FM skip sloshing around and chewing up the fringe-reception of RDS along I-55.

Next time I pass by I'll make a few adjustments on the encoder. Larry's built such a good signal that the RDS has to work hard to keep up with it :) By the way, he also built a very nice studio. When I was up there I amused the staff with my "oohs and ahhs" over the buttons and faders on the slick new console.

Jim Gregory! Thank you, that's what it said. Shows what a poor memory I have; the good side is each day is literally a "brand new day". :D
