WKZQ in the 80s sounds like a variety hits station

Certainly not a top 40. I've got an aircheck from 1987 and they will play a new song followed by a song from the 1960s
 
It sounded Hot AC to me by 1984. I don't remember anything from the 60s but I remember in 1983 hearing either "Jet Airliner" or "Rock'n Me" by Steve Miller in the middle of what sounded like a Top 40 playlist.

Oh, wait, 1987. I didn't even go then. But by 1988 KZQ was rocking pretty hard just before making a switch to rock after 98 Rock went Rhythmic.
