WLQT 99.9 Getting Retro AT40 from the 1970s every Sunday morning!

OK, while listening to the retro AT40 I've noticed that some of the Top 40 Extras include a guy named Mike Kasem (any relation to Casey himself?) interrupting and playing a song that would enter the Top 40 the following week. Examples include "Rock and Roll (Hoochie Koo)" by Rick Derringer from the 2/23/74 broadcast and "Country Road" by James Taylor from the 3/6/71 broadcast. Were the original broadcasts doctored to include these? I can't see how they could predict the future so accurately!

Ive only heard Mike Casem do the segments the last few wks. They were handled by Ed McMann. I'd assund Mike is a relative but don't know

May 3's broadcast moved back an hour from the 8-11 slot to 7-10 (just like WGRR in Cincinnati). Plus, now WLQT airs smooth jazz after that; "The '70s" with Steve Goddard is gone--unless it moved.

A few years back, Premiere began syndicating AT40 in its original four hour format from 1980-88, and then a few weeks later they cut out #s 40-31 or so because stations that carried the show felt that listeners weren't familiar enough with those songs, so Premiere did away with the first hour, and joined the show in progress, and by doing that, the show was shortened to three hours, and only the years 1982-88 were aired. The show was no longer syndicated after December 2002. However, Mix 107.7 kept playing it until the new "AT40: The 80s" debuted a year or two ago, which restored not only the years 1980 and 1981, but they went back to presenting the show in its four hour entirety, and is also hosted by Ed McMann, who filled in on occasion for Casey in his later years on AT40.

I never knew that history until reading this thread. I would have really disliked the original version of the AT40-80s. Songs 40-31 are always the most interesting. Plus, by far and away, I would rather listen to 1980 and 1981 than the rest of the decade. There are some individual exceptions, but overall 1985-1989 is my least favorite era of pop music, it's so overproduced. The 80s should be the "music of my life" since that's when I was in high school and college, but I prefer earlier and latter eras of music. I would much rather listen to anything from Ocean "Put Your Hand In The Hand" or Lady Gaga "Poker Face" than anything from my generation such as those horrible Kenny Loggins movie soundtrack songs, just to name one example of many.

Someone from the 80's wants to hear Ocean? That's wonderful! I grew up on all of that "horrible" early 70's music, like Candy Man, for instance. :)

Funny that you mention "Candy Man". It was on the most recent AT-40s-The 70s countdown from 1972. It was the first time I heard it since it was a current. That's what's so great about the show, you will hear all the 70s songs considered "horrible", basically anything non-rock. Yet those same pop songs that have long been taboo and stigmatized are what helped turn me and millions of others into lifelong music fans.

Originally I said "The '70s" with Steve Goddard was gone; it's moved to a new slot, 7-10 Saturday mornings. (Of course, it has to compete with the 1980s AT40 on "Mix" 107.7!)

Did Christmas come early this year? On July 4's rebroadcast of the 7/4/70 "AT40" (Casey's first!) they accidentally ran two Christmas songs, one by Whitney Houston (whose name I forget) and "The Christmas Song" by Nat "King Cole" that were the top two in a Christmas survey instead of the top two from today in 1970. Then they started the smooth jazz show, so all hope was lost. Oh, well, they probably get played to death on terrestrial radio; WLQT's site has a complete list. (At least they didn't mess up #40 and #39!)

Blame that one on Anthoney Newley...was Sammy's last hit song along with a lame follow-up "This Is My Life.."........and I don't give a DAMN!
(gasp!) MOR stations dug on playing THAT track surely for obvious reasons.

Not sure about 99.9 Lite FM, but I know Mix 107.7 has run into problems with AT 40: The 80s playing the incorrect show. The problem is not locally but instead rests with the server that feeds the shows to the radio stations. Also, to fill the allotted time slots, they play music to pad out the four hour slot. Hope that helps!

The good news: 1979 is about to be highlighted! I went to WLQT's website, and they have the 11/3/79 "AT40" listed.

The bad news: Since it was a 4-hour show, they start with 32 and leave 40-33 alone.
