WMPM 1270/Smithfield and 94.3 translator sell for $220K to Regional Mexican format operator

Per Radioinsight.com, Johnson Broadcast Ventures sells Gospel 1270 WMPM/94.3 W232DO Smithfield to Jose Steven Lara’s Gorilla Broadcasting for $220,000. Gorilla owns and operates Regional Mexican stations under the “El Gallo” brand in Ellaville, Georgia, and North Myrtle Beach. Gorilla has a time brokerage agreement with Johnson to operate WMPM ahead of the closing.

I'm pretty sure that I saw WMPM listed on Radio TV Deals for a while. The listing didn't mention the station by name, but stated that the station was an AM with an FM translator in one of North Carolina's fastest growing counties. Fit the description of WMPM pretty well.

So, I am not surprised. But I am disappointed, as I quite liked WMPM's urban oldies/classic gospel format. I couldn't always get a good signal, but loved listening when I could. Likely won't be listening to the new format, but maybe it will give the station some new potential given the growing Hispanic population in the area.

I will miss "The Big 1270" even if the format was short-lived.
