WNCI had 21 minutes of commercials in the 11:00 am hour

10 1/2 minute long commercial breaks definitely don't help
It's one of the reasons I stopped listening to a morning show here that I really used to enjoy. It got to be to the point where if I got into my car and started my commute at the start of one of their long commercial breaks, that would take up a huge chunk of my commute time. I've never been one to reach for another preset on my radio when a break happens to come up (primarily because I understand those are required to pay the bills and keep the station on the air), but after about 3 consecutive minutes of spots, that's when I move on.

Realistically a commercial break is always going to be around 7 minutes long, but on a personal level, I'm with you lol I'm not sticking around for more than a couple of minutes of a commercial break. There are just way too many non-commercial options out there in today's world.

Why would any advertiser stand for being anything but the first or second commercial in a run of 14 (if that seven minutes has all 30s in it). If the station said, you have to be deep in some of those as part of the cycle, I wouldn't advertise on that station.

And to me, the way they do it is just awful. They'll play like 3 minutes of commercials, do the weather report followed by a promo for some iHeartRadio show, then they'll put another four or five commercials on, then do another iHeartRadio promo, then come back to the music. I would save the iHeart promos for between songs and make them only 10 seconds long for one. The actual commercial time was probably 7, at most, 8 minutes. If your commercial load is that heavy, you shouldn't clutter it with extra crap lol

"We asked you, our fans, to help us understand what would make Alt a better station. You told us the No. 1 issue was too many commercials that seem to go on forever," Senior VP of Programming Mike Kaplan wrote on the station web site. "So, to meet your expectations, we created the 2 Minute Promise -- we're giving you fewer commercials overall and in shorter segments."

Unfortunately it was a promise they couldn't keep. Three years later, the wait to get back to the music increased from two minutes to infinite, when they became a simulcast of all-news 1010 WINS.

Jack FM in Dayyon WGTZ 92.9 runs 7 minute
commercial breaks twice an hour and their numbers suck. They are Adult Hits so it's not just CHR.

No, it's because of the commercials. Who wants to be subjected to that kind of assault?

WOSU has NO commercials, and they're tied with WNCI.

WCOL is owned by iHeart, and has the same number of commercials, and it's #1.

It's NOT because of commercials. If it was, WOSU would be #1.

As I've said many times, commercials are the ONLY revenue source for these stations.

Literally anyone you ask will tell you radio sucks because there are too many commercials

Somebody has to pay so you can hear music for free. Somebody.

Here's why: Alt 92.3 was billing less than $9 million, and WINS bills $32 million. Who makes more money? You tell me.

If you're forced by law to own a limited number of stations, they all have to make money.

If you have to run 21 minutes of commercials to pay everyone, then that's what you do.

They don't have to play 21 minutes to pay everyone, and make a profit. Sunny 95, The Blitz, Qfm, Power 107.5, the point is most stations aren't bombarding you with that amount of commercials. Hell, The Blitz has an entirely local staff, and they're the only station in that cluster pulling in any kind of ratings, and they are still on the air, and profitable. 21 minutes of commercials isn't what they have to do. They're choosing to be greedy. If they do indeed need that many commercials to make a profit, then it's time for a format change.

I don't know lol I did however point to a company that only has one station out of four pulling in any kind of ratings. So, 75 percent of the cluster gets lower end 1 point ratings, with 25 percent billing between mid 5's and mid 6's that has figured out a way to not throw 21 minutes of commercials at you on any of their stations, and still, most likely, I'm not literally hanging out in the company to for sure know, make a profit.

Perhaps they CAN'T sell 21 minutes of commercials an hour. Unless you're actually privy to their financial ledger, you have no way of knowing just how profitable they really are.

Read your own subject line: 21 minutes in the 11 AM hour. That's not prime time. They don't do that at 7AM when the most people are listening. It's also not every hour. I'm sure if you listen after 7PM, they're not running 21 minutes of commercials. You have to make your money when you can. Sure, WCOL doesn't have to do 21 minutes because they're #1 and can charge more for spots. They have detailed hour by hour ratings and they know the optimum time to do it.
