Thanks for the attention to WNEG. It's a real enigma in today's radio world but we're very proud of it's staff and position in the Toccoa area. In the not too distant future, we will be increasing the daytime power from 500 watts on 630 kHz to 5000 watts which will triple our daytime coverage area. We have a CP to go 220 watts with two towers but have since gotten a 250 watt FM translator CP on top of Currahee Mountain...the coverage from it will nearly match a Class A FM station. I hate the thought of taking any chances of wounding the AM station but the cost of building a directional AM facility even for a station like WNEG is very questionable business decision and as much as I love AM stations which still do well... it's a FM world out there. At night, WNEG's 44 watts only goes out about 5 miles. All the people who live along Lake Hartwell near Toccoa can't hear their local radio station after sunset. The FM signal would cover them like a glove. Savannah dropping nighttime allows the 220 watts to work but we can't get any more power at night with a single tower as the 630 in Lexington KY is our most severe nighttime restriction.
I read the article when my copy came in the mail last week. Kudos, Art. Wonder when the big boys will realize the secrete to making radio work? What you guys are doing with WNEG is what we did in Hawkinsville 22 years ago!
WNEG is a spectacular sounding station technically. Art, I wouldn't worry too much about wounding the AM band..I am sad to finally realize that it's just a dry hole on most radios..with of course the exception of a skillfully programmed and compelling to hear radio station that people are conditioned to listening to for LOCAL and LIVE content. The addition of a translator can only enhance the current listener base. Mr Sutton..all of your properties are proud broadcasting stations serving thier repective communities..in addition to the pride you must have in them, I would be willing to bet that they are paying thier way..Congrats from Franklin!
