Do you ever go outside?

But with a weak signal and some sound problems. The nighttime signal of WNTP 990 AM is having major problems because the signal was off the air last night and tonight but it is back on but with some problems, anyone know what is going on here?

I was able to hear WMVP/1000 at 12:55 am, like a local, with the 990 carrier off, Sunday night/Monday morning. Very rare. WMVP had some nice production leading up to ID on the top of the hour. Same top hour Voice guy as WTAM, KDKA, & WWVA. I tried to pick up WTEM/980 or WILK/980, but no luck.
Try again. WNTP 990 AM just signed off for the night. They must be having major problems with their nighttime transmitter.

When I was in Philadelphia some years ago, I was pulling in WTRY-980, Troy NY, at night, (now WOFX) very clearly on my Superadio 2, even with 990 on the air...

1000 WMVP, Chicago was once the legendary top 40 station WCFL, "The Voice of Labor."

Too bad Wibbage did not have regular xmitter problems back in the day so people around here could listen to one of the true class acts in AM top 40 radio.

Rene Tetro, Salem's CE said they would be down. They've done this the past few nights and maybe down again.....

I actually heard Rene Tetro sign the station off at midnight last night for maintenance. Sounded cool. Still no 980 pick up, or for that matter no distant 990 at all. CKGM must have really pulled their 50Kw signal back away from this direction. Only takes them 6 towers to do it. Radio-locator lists two Montreal stations, 990/CKGM & 990/CHTX. Do the share time? Signal and power seem the same.

Please, God, don't let them be installing IBOC.

Right now I can get a tolerable signal from 1010 WINS. (Thank you, C Crane.) IBOC99 might ruin that.

fred...I was a semi-lucky one you speak of.

Growing up in NW Montgomery County, Pottstown, I lived in the famed Wibbage null. Daytime was fair to good, but that signal was afraid of the dark. When it dropped to 10kw, WCFL replaced it.

I also got clear daytime WAEB, WSBA, and WARM. WRAW and WHAT too, all I had to do is turn my radio 90 degrees. But when WFIL became Famous 56 with the Pop Explosion in 1966...that area, for the first time ever, had a solid city grade signal with rock 'n roll, day AND night.

I say semi-lucky because although I loved hearing WLS and 'CFL from the Windy City, I never heard a single Hy Lit nighttime show, only when he did daytime fill-in. That means I never got to hear the "Wibbage Hall of Fame" on Sunday nights.

I lived and worked in several markets back in the day. I got to listen regularly to some of the best-remembered AM top 40 rockers (even got to work at one). But IMHO CFL was the best ever; a station that really made we want to be part of radio. It's too bad you didn't get to hear their daytime line-up; I always considered Barney Pip in the evening the weakest link. But throughout the day they scored well on all points that make a station unique: Personalities, jingles, production, news - plus the most fantastic crime fighter the world has ever known.

Wibbage was OK - just OK. Storer was notoriously cheap and probably thought it was more cost-effective when the station had no competition to just pay for OK. When FIL flipped, Wibbage dropped like a broken card table. Wibbage gets a C. WFIL gets a B. WABC gets a B+. Nobody around here gets an A. WCFL was the only A+ in that era.

990's nighttime signal and daytime signal is weak in the city and its usually strong. Something is wrong with their transmitters I think.

???

Both the night and day signals are weak AND strong?
Does not compute, Will Robinson.

Re: Brief commentary

Julius: As a friend, Study for the Amateur Radio Technician Class radio license. Get a rig, and 10 or so antennas on your roof, one for every band you want to experiement with. It is a great and rewarding hobby! You are even allowed to bounce your signal off of the moon to talk to other places (A.K.A. E.M.E. propagation.) There are a lot of radio professionals that visit this board, and that are in our midst. I highly respect these people. As an amateur radio operator for 15 years, I still enjoy reading the comments of the people who are directly involved with the technical aspects of the operation of a commercial radio station. So PLEASE. Experiment with radio, let it embrace you, but please... No Comment Thank You !! Have a day! :)

I think Julius meant the signal is usually strong but it's weak now.

However, JULIUS, they have been doing maintence for the last week.. nothing is wrong.

CHTX were the call letters when the station was known as 990 hits until it went oldies then all sports around the turn of the century, it is now CKGM full time with a sports format.

I guess I should step in and explain what's going on here at WNTP. Very simple, really. We are rebuilding the daytime antenna system, as I have been promising for the past year. When completed it will increase the station's signal strength in Chester and Bucks counties. It has required a lot more reconstruction of the phasor and antenna tuning units that originally planned, so the project has mushroomed well beyond what was envisioned.

We have been signing-off on some nights to make changes to the system that have to be completed with the carrier off. Most of the work is done during the day. Of course, with the old daytime antenna system now disassembled, it means that we have to run non-directionally during the day from our tower 2 at 12.5kw. Hence the weak signal during the day. From sunset until midnight we have been operating on various modes (12.5kw NDA/normal 10kw night/5kw NDA/etc.) depending on what work is being done. That's why the night signal has been bad, as well.

With any luck, we should have things somewhat back to normal by the end of the week.

Note to Sam Lit: thanks for the plug. It was one of those rare moments that I get on the air.
