"What purpose does a radio personality (disc jockey, if you will) perform? That is a toughie. I suppose you could ask fifty different jocks this question and come up with 50 different answers. To me... first and foremost... a radio personality should entertain. By entertain... I don't mean he has to get on the radio and crack a thousand funny one liners. For a disc jockey to be entertaining, he must play the music his audience wants to hear.. he must provide his audience with useful, topical information. He must be happy and sound happy... he must enjoy his own show before others will enjoy it. He ain't heavy... he's my Dee jay."

--- Michael O'Shea, from the back of the KLIF 21 classics album volume 4.

I used to listen to O'Shea in the heyday of KLIF and beyond.

Radio pros say the listener doesn't want to hear a DJ. "We have tons of research that says just that". I think they do. Then they usually say my memories of radio need to remain in the past because it is a very different world today. Agreed.

My first question is if people don't like hearing jocks, why do you have a morning show? Listeners hate jocks, right?

I know, they do a talk oriented entertainment program. You're right. But you say people want to hear music without DJs interrupting. Okay, I accept that but again why does the 'entertainment' become the highlight of your station that hinges on your success? Is this 'entertainment' not what we speak of, but instead of 48 minutes an hour of it, just a little dab here and there throughout the day?

I suppose what I am asking (as a GM of a station) is if morning shows bring you audience why can't the same entertainment keep them through the day, tempered by daypart to adapt to lifestyles? Why must it be all or nothing?

It's been tried, and it doesn't work. People daypart their media.

The other thing we know is certain formats work best with DJs, others don't.

Your radio 'know it alls' have ruined radio for listeners. You deserve the demise you will ultimately experience when you can no longer sustain your 'business model'.
