And now, the comments section on the "official" youtube clip, nothing but disdain for Dispatch, and people calling for boycott! Way to make negative publicity for yourselves, in what could have been a positive one instead! Good job, Dispatch!

Look, I understand the Dispatch's legal need to protect its intellectual property rights. And to do so, they have to act to remove infringing content, which the original YouTube video by "ritchey" most assuredly was.

But, again, nose/spite/face.

They recognized that the video being on YouTube was important...so much so that THEY CREATED A BRAND NEW YOUTUBE ACCOUNT with this video as the first upload. The Dispatch saw no need to be on YouTube until Friday.

But before they did that, they played the lawyer card, making them look bad in the eyes of EVERYONE.

Again, though it appears a posting on Gawker fueled this thing, it wouldn't have gotten to worldwide iconic status if the video was only on Dispatch.com, and their story pretty much says that. And with 12-million-plus hits, their servers may not have been able to handle the load, assuming any similar amount of hits found their way to the Dispatch's site.

Of course, the Dispatch folks are also broadcasters (WBNS), but they sure don't seem to "get" the Internet.
 
They seem to always yank a video after it starts getting a lot of hits. I've seen other clips stay up for months or even years, only after getting thousands of hits do they yank it. remember the "bed intruder rapist" video that was autotuned and it became a hit? the Huntsville tv station tried to yanked the original after the autotune version took off. but once its out there its almost impossible to keep off because so many people use youtube downloader and re-upload everything. but it really ticks people off when they yank stuff. it free promotion to the originator of the clip. when you take down the clip, you shoot yourself in the foot.

Yanking the original YouTube upload, which -- along with the outpouring of viewer reaction -- was the compelling and living record of this viral phenomenon -- was even crazier given that the guy who uploaded it gave explicit credit to the Dispatch...not to mention that the Dispatch name and logo were prominently visible at the end of the video. It was their right to yank it, but an unspeakably stupid, shortsighted move from a marketing and goodwill perspective.

In 8 hours since the Dispatch made its own "authorized" YouTube upload of the original video, it has amassed (drum roll, please) a whopping 301 views. THUD!

I noticed that Ann Fisher interviewed Doral Chenowith III in case you are interested... They mentions the unauthorized copyrighted video that was posted on youtube in the following audio link...
They also interviewed Public Affairs Journalism Director Debra Jasper about the Dispatch removing the copyrighted version from youtube.

Usually, when a brand new video on YouTube in the process of picking up a lot of steam, I've noticed that the number of views will "stick" at between 300-400 for several hours, with the updated number of views eventually being reflected later on. The video was apparently in the starting stages of being viral and, as of today, the new video has over 12,000 views.

The Dispatch's YouTube upload of the original Ted Williams video had about 10,000 of those 12,000 views yesterday, so I really doubt this is going to be anything like the unauthorized posting by "ritchey" that got over 12 million views in about a week before the Dispatch demanded its removal.

Conversely, the modified version uploaded by Russia Today (!) about the same time ritchey's was taken down now has about 7 million views.  It's the first one that pops up if you enter "Ted Williams" in YouTube search.  I don't even see the Dispatch upload listed in the first 100 results.  Regardless of what one thinks about Ted Williams or the TW phenomenon, the Dispatch was sure wrong if it thought it would take over as the "virus-carrier."
