I can't fill in the rest of the lyrics, but the song was called "The Hoser-Doc Hip-Hop Rock." It was rapped to a loop of the Run-DMC cover of "Walk This Way," pressed to 45 vinyl(!) and sold for charity. (Copyright? What's that?) Somebody out there's got to have a copy...
 
I would have to say that the worst was when The Promotions Director for WSC FM was running the board for Murphy while he was on a remote. They go to him, LIVE and he's saying "I Love riding my ****in' Harley in South Carolina.. you juts can't beat this (BLEEP).. Etc..Etc...Etc.." ... the guy let him go ON AND ON AND ON. For like fourty or fifty seconds Before he threw in another music bed.. AND THEN STILL LEFT THE MIC UP! Murphy kept a blazin'. funny stuff.

Glad to see we did get a WNC Blunders list on the Charlotte board.

WKSF 99.9 is now licensed to Old Fort for a very good reason. When 104.3 was moved in from Marion, it became licensed to Old Fort, offering first-local service. Since no other station is licensed to Old Fort, they had to change the COL for WKSF so they could move 104.3 to Fletcher and thus make the most of the Class-A signal for Asheville.

The WKSF stick is still on Mount Pisgah, but it's amazing how often you get light static, even in downtown Asheville. In fact, the way the crow flies, I live a mile from the stick, and I get static at home.

Has anyone noticed that quite a few of these blunders are made by the fine folks at CC??

Since the subject of locally-produced novelty tunes has come up, this might be of interest.

C-103's afternooner J.R. and night jock Jay Michaels did a novelty tune in late 1986 that was a cover of L.L. Cool J's "You Be Illin'" called "They Be Illin'" which was pretty much a not-so-subtle attack of most of the other stations in Columbia at the time.

Here is the lyrics (at least the ones that I remember). You have you use your imagination with the timing on the original L.L. Cool J song in order to get the feel of this. The first section is a "conversation" between J.R. and Jay Michaels over the first 10 seconds of the song."

"Yo J.R.!!!"
"What up, J.R."
"Nothing much Jay,Gotta little rap for ya"
"All right J.R., about the other stations?
"Yeah, you know it"
" Well then, lay it on me and lets have some fun"
"Yes let's have some fun.....Hit it!!!

"I turned on the radio the other day."
"Couldn't believe what they had to say."
"A thousand dollars-hot every day???"
"You better cash that check before it bounces-no pay"!

"Track the music, if it does it for ya."
"Playing the hits...from North Dakota???"
"A trip to nowhere and you're right back."

I should point out some things in the song so that everyone that wasn't around at the time could understand it better.

WNOK was running a contest where they were giving away $1,000 dollars every weekday for being a certain caller (104, I think) when you hear the song of the day. Originally, it was $104 dollars every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and $1,000 on Thursday, but I think they beefed it up for the Fall, 1986 book.

"Track the music" was a contest that The Big DM was doing at about this time and I believe they had done this for several years in a row during the mid to late 80's. Probably the longest-running contest in the history of that station.

"The push is on" was a last-ditch effort of Go-102's before they've changed formats.

"Blip 106" is, as you've probably guessed, a swipe at B-106. They had just hired Woody after he was bounced from mornings at Z-96.

I wish that I could remember the rest of it, but they did mention C-103's morning show which was hosted by Big Tom Winston and Karren St. John as well as the rest of the full-time staff.

from the late 80's? I think he then moved to Q102 in Savannah sometime
after Hurricane Hugo. Every time I hear a "Wild Wing Cafe" radio spot
(here in Atlanta they play less frequently than in Charleston or Hilton
Head), but all I can think about is him always saying during his time at
the KISS station - that he was "chief cook and bottle washer". He said that

Yes,that is the same person. He cam to C-103 from Baltimore's WMAR (later WMKR after the station was sold). He left Columbia to help put 99.7 WHTK Hilton Head on the air in 1988 and stayed until 1990 when he left to go to work at Z-102 in Savannah. After Z-102, he was at Fox 106.1 for several years.

That reminds me of another blunder: When WHTK abandoned CHR in late 1992 to go Country. I remember that not lasting very long. WLOW wound up on that frequency not long after, then The Breeze and then the signal was moved to Charleston.

HOLY COW ROBYN!!!!! Thanks for bringing back those memories... How bout WDPN 103.1 which was Columbias first FM urban station... Yeah i know there was the BIG DM but back in the early 80's DM was still in the Gamecock City... WDPN went after both WOIC and DM and went away as C 103 was born... WIGGLE 106 was also another blunder with tech problems all the time... I was still in Jr High at the time they were on, but they always seem to have had the most audio problems I had ever seen... If they were not having audio problems they were always having other issues... WIGL when they first came on the air I remember them having the same playlist as what also was new at the time Whissle 100 in the upstate... Then there was MIX 106 in Newberry... I remember when they first signed on they had some of the most god awful audio as they were broadcasting through two phonelines... The music was all over the place... I remember them being AC, Rock, CHR, Rap and some crazy format with classic soul with some of the most strangest music I had ever heard... Then there was Bubba 106 which went on to become Dixie 106 to what would be gospel till they went off the air... CC

Yup!

Are you getting static or multipath? Now at that elevation power output has to be reduced from the 100,000 watts at 2000 feet to 48 KW.


If you live a mile from the tower, then a good bit of the signal may be overshooting you. I thought that area was in the Pisgah National Forest.

At least it's cooler THERE than here in Columbia......<sigh!>

Yeah, it's multipath, but annoying nonetheless. Then again, their programming is MUCH more annoying that static could ever be. It's just like every cookie-cutter country station in the world...I just don't 'feel' anything when I listen. I remember before the switch to country, the station had a real identity that we could all relate to. Now, it's just 'everytown radio'.

I can throw a rock into the Pisgah National Forest from my back yard. And yes, it's probably overshooting me. WLOS-TV is also on that stick, and I can't get them off the air at home, either.

And yes, it's MUCH cooler here than in Columbia...Thankfully. I'm opening a second office in Houston this fall, and I haven't figured out yet how I'm gonna handle the heat.
