Worst songs on country radio

one of my hot button issues for years has been the fact that classic country artists have been looked upon as red haired step children, at a japanese family reunion. this is nothing new. go back to the even the 80's, and most major market reporting stations were trying desperatly to severe the link to the george jones, merle haggards, loretta lynns. sure they played one or two token hit songs here and there, but rarely rotated the new stuff, or back catalog of hits of these veterans. by the late 80's, major maeket radio had these veteran acts graveyard dead on their playlists. so congrats to you alan mccall, for programming your country correctly. country should never forget its roots. this can be accomplished by custom music clocking, and dayparting, and special weekend oldie shows as well. unfortunately, at this point in time, most country radio listeners under 40, are completely void of a musical education on all the greats from the 80's, and 70's and earlier. eventhough, cash, and willie, and waylon are as popular as ever. hmm? even hard core rappers from the inner city have respect for the man in black. major market country music radio has been programmed like one big music infomercial for big business, with little regard for the great American musical legacy thats been part of our lives for generations.

re: lee ann womack. i knew some wise ass would throw 'i hope you dance' my way. i think shes gone on public record saying she will never record that kind of stuff again. her hit song "a little past little rock" was one great pure country recording a few years back(now long gone from any radio play list). to all those AC pop listeners that got into her via that 'hope you dance', pop hit. i hope a small percentage actually dug deeper into her catalog, and took a loving to that pure country stuff. maybe even for the first time. and maybe a few of those eventually, also discovered tammy wynette, dolly parton, loretta lynn, and leonna williams as well. at that point now you get it!

What's your point? These stations are private business operations, not museums or government entities. Truthfully, they always have been. The minute country radio started aiming at northern cities instead of the rural south, it foresook any heritage it might have had. That began a long time ago. The musicians, labels, and writers all sought big money, and folks like Chet Atkins and Owen Bradley knew how to get it. Roy Acuff hasn't had a hit since the 50s. That's when Appalachian style country music went out of style. From then on, it was about selling millions of records, touring all over the country (not just the south), and making country music into America's music. They succeeded.

I noticed she has been going back to the more traditional material and I'm glad she did. But I can't forget how many times I had to listen to that song until I was sick of it.

One song I hate is Long Black Train by Josh Turner. However, I get the luxury of hearing it constantly on the local classic country station here because Clear Channel thinks it is a true classic. They have been throwing in all sorts of even newer crap lately.

They already had a playlist so shallow I can name nearly every song they play. They already have an entirely syndicated airstaff. They already have a new-country station which is perhaps the worst country station I have ever heard (and based on the Aribitron ratings versus the Cumulus country station, I would say others agree.) Why do they need to torture us even more?

Rascal Flatts I have to add to the list if I had not add it before. Now that my local lite rock station is giving them airplay now.Their music is ok .but the lead singers voice is very annoying. and drives me nuts like a teachers nails on a blackboard .He sounds like a whinning girl.

So spring for $14.95 a month and get Sirius.

I seriously considered getting XM before they merged. I have since moved on to internet radio. However I do not have a smartphone so I am stuck with broadcast radio for the drive. Once I get a smartphone later this year I will definitely be listening to internet radio only (and WSM). Until then I am stuck with crappy Clear Channel.

i predict we about due to get ear balled with a justin bieber country-politan single release via country radio infomercial style force feed rotation to the masses.
hell, it may well probably sound more country-fied than rascal flatt, or kieth urban-ite.

ughhh....gettin sick here...........better plug in that john anderson CD quick, or im gonna vomit..............

"wild and blue, its no wonder, just look at the things that you do........."

just in the country nick of time, thanks i needed that!

one country song i hated was a 90`s cover of the janis joplin song "piece of my heart" from the big brother and the holding company days.

joplin sang the song with the emotion of someone who had their heart broken bad and the woman who sang it(i can`t think of her name) put no emotion in it at all.

Faith Hill did the cover. I actually don't mind it, but I don't remember the original version so I can't compare them.

"Would You Go With Me," Josh Turner (I always dread this one)
"I Like It, I Love It (I Want Some More of It)," Tim McGraw (this one I dread too; unfortunately, this seems to be, in the opinion of a lot of country stations, his defining song, and the only one they play when they announce Tim McGraw)

I usually like Josh Turner. I don't know this one. Maybe I would if I heard it.

I used to hate this one but I heard it the other night not knowing what it was, and it sounds country enough to appeal to me.

I can't remember the title now or the lyrics I heard, but there was this rock song someon added a banjo and a fiddle to. I'm guessing it's new.

I must say I cannot tolerate anything by Brad Paisley these days. He started off good, but these days it seems the fame has gone to his head. He seems to think he went from "making" Country music to "being" Country music.

He's a core artist and country radio should play him as much as they do. But personally I agree with you. When I hear "Old Alabama" (which I like) I can't help but appreciate that Alabama (and perhaps that generation of country artists as a whole) had a certain humbleness about them that was part of the appeal of country music.

Although what we are seeing could be a reflection of changes in the culture. There seems to be more of a demand today for what I would call alpha male worship. This always existed in pop/rock but is newer to country . The younger female listeners in particular want male artists who are kind of cocky and narcissistic. Although there are still country acts who seem to be more about the music than image, Zac Brown band for example comes across that way.

One of the more annoying songs has the words "I see you, I see you, I see you". Another stalker song in the tradition of The Police's "Every Breath You Take".
