Would a spanish Tropical FM station do well in New Haven/Hartford?

I was thinking do you think a spanish station like "La Mega" in NYC would get good ratings in the New Haven/Hartford area?

I think if it was on the FM dial it would get decent numbers... nobody really listens to AM radio anymore.

Opinions?

Define "nobody"....if "nobody" listens to AM anymore, why does TIC-A do so well? Why do I get calls regularly asking why they can't hear us after sunset...

Just curious why you chose to say "nobody"...

Right now combined WRYM and WLAT get about a 2.7 (at couple books ago it was a 3.1) in the 12+ ratings. WPRX doesn't show up in the 12+. One would assume if programmed properly an FM would get at least a 3 12+, provided the AMers flipped to something else.

Nobody listens to AM? Um, listen to WLAT during their reggaeton shows and tell me how many callers they put on the air. That small snippet represents a very small sample of who's listening.

Would such a station be able to attract national/regional advertisers, or do they still avoid Hispanic-targeted radio outside the top markets? Would it make bottom-line sense for any of the huge conglomerates to flip one of their Hartford properties to tropical, or would the flipping station have to be WCCC or WDRC-FM? Would either station bill better with a tropical format than with either oldies/classic hits or active rock?

I meant for music... sorry. News talk & Sports talk always do well on the AM dial, not a music station though..

Agreed?

Ok Folks..When is Power flip to Tropical ? Someone always post that crap here .

Hartford as a market needs an alternative station over a Spanish station.

I actually think hartford needs an FM spanish station more then it needs anything else.

Yes, we do have some AMs doing spanish programming but none of them have a crystal clear full market signal 24/7!

One of the major FM's should go spanish, doing a musical format.. and let one of the AMs do news/talk...

Most people listen to FM for music. You still have people over 50 that wouldn't mind having an Adults Standard on AM (after all that's how they gre up listening to radio). Many ethnic communities will listen to music from their homeland on AM too, since it is usually the only option available.

But I do understand your point. Thanks for clarifying!

I agree Adam. Bring alternative back. 104.1 is a wasted signal!!
But, I reluctantly think a Spanish FM would come online long before alternative came back.
Even Philly, NY and Washington are without alternative.

AM or not, I used to love "JAMZ 910" here in New Britain. That was a good station while it lasted.

I think 910 is doing a wonderfull job!!! Its too bad they dont stream... Or do they?

I agree and I don't speak the language, but I do listen to their Reggaeton Shows. No, they don't stream, but here is their website:http://www.myspace.com/mega910am

The perfect secenario would be for someone to buy 910 and an FM station and move everything from 910 to the FM.

I kinda agree with you Marc.

I also think we'll see Spanish on FM before we see alternative or whatever on FM.

It'd be nice if someone purchased the 104.9 in Middletown and actually did something with it. Hartford/New Haven is already signal limited enough, and frankly there's not nearly enough of a market for that on the commerical band.... "Channel 104-9" as an alternative rock station... would fill a huge void.

Why would Hartford need a spanish language station when the two already on AM don't do so well?

If they flipped to reggaeton, it would be the biggest joke. That music is going to be such a short-lived trend, the biggest hit is that "Gasolina" song, and it's retched putrid terrible music. They don't even listen to it in Latin America, it's just crap for the thug wannabes here with a latin twist so they can "represent".

The AM's don't do well because of their signals. Neither covers the entire Market very well day and night, as I said in my previous posts. I think that's one of the biggest reasons for the failure of the format in this area so far.

Spanish audiences apparently prefer FM over AM for music even more than other listeners, at least according to David Eduardo's posts. It's reasonable to conclude whatever a modestly successful AM got what be dramatically increased by that format's move to FM.

The next question is: Who would do it? As long as Clear Channel feels it can use 104.1 as a rhythmic CHR flanker to 93.7, then change isn't likely in Hartford. 95.7 may be one to watch, if cutbacks hurt it. Forget about 104.9 selling to a non-religious broadcaster. They're like 94.7 in NYC... determined to keep religion despite all offers.

A market that's 9.8% Hispanic is nothing to sneeze at, but then what particular Spanish language format can get someone the most ad dollars?
