Would a station like Fresno's 103.7 The Beat work in the Bay?

Hello there, been reading these board for awhile and thought of something.

Would a station like Freno's 103.7 The Beat work in the Bay? It has a pure west coast old school sound that totally reminds of Wild 94.9 back in the day. Also, alot of the songs are rarely played in Bay Area radio.

I don't even think I hear a pre-2002 song on Wild 94.9 except for 2Pac or Biggie's Mo Money, Mo Problems.
99.7 Now plays throwbacks every once in awhile but not as much as they used to.
98.1 Kiss FM's old school doesn't even touch the 90's anymore.
KMEL plays mixes in throwbacks and has their noon mixshow but no rhythmic or freestyle.

Your thoughts?

Haha I'm aware of that. I was talking about the playlist and format. Don't want a exact clone, it will need a little Bay Area flava!

Not really. 98.1 is almost entirely 70s and 80s focused, with a little from 90-91. 103.7 is heavily 90s centric, with some from the 1980s and early 2000s. They don't have much overlap. Fresno already has 97.9, which is very similar to 98.1; so that market can support both formats.

To someone not interested in old school rap and R&B, there isn't much difference between Kiss and The Beat, but for people who actually listen to those stations, there is a difference.
 
I think 98.1 tried it a few years back from 2009-2010, but it ran into KMEL and KYLD territory. If 98.1 KISS-FM plays music like 103.7 THE BEAT in Fresno, it will hurt 106.1 KMEL and Wild 94.9 ratings.

That's correct. For a short time, KISQ was "98.1 Kiss" (dropping the "FM"), used the slogan "The Beat of the Bay" and added a lot of 90s music. I really liked it, actually. But they dumped it after only a couple of months. You may be right that it was encroaching on Wild and KMEL territory.

I loved it too, they used the old Power 92.7's slogan, and had 90s, 2000s, and currents/today's hits as well. I bet it did overlap sister stations KMEL and KYLD, as well as CBS owed KMVQ. Too bad good things come to an end :-\

103.7 The Beat doesn't play anything newer than 2005. Probably won't hurt if KISQ added some 90's Rhythmic/Dance/Freestyle as well, drop the 80's non-rhythmic music (It really doesn't fit in well.), and add some mixshows again. Gen-X would finally have a station in the bay to listen!
 
Honeslty I dont think KFBT Fresno will last seeing that Clear Channel is flipping most of the GenX stations. Maybe Im wrong since KOKO moved into a Classic Hits direction. Fresno is Rhythmic friendly. KISQ did sound good during that time but I think it started to run off some of its adult listeners. Mixing The Ojays with Lady Gaga didnt sound good. Kiss current PD use to program KCMG and KMVN in Los Angeles. His current formula on KISS is working but it didnt do much for KMVN. If Kiss tweaked its sound to be like KFBT it would hardly hurt Wild and KMEL. Those stations target young teens and play new music.

Yeah they were, early 2009 was when they transitioning from a Rhythmic AC to a Rhythmic leaning CHR. Remember when "Everyone was making the move to 99.7"? They used the Movin' name with the new format until New Year's 2011.

Thinking about it that time KMVQ was sounding really good at that time. They went out of the cookie-cutter Movin' station to play all the latest Rhythmic hits mixed with the classic dance/urban/freestyle. They even had a Freestyle Explosion concert and St. John just came to Movin' giving the station a whole new personality!
 
103.7 is failing miserably in Fresno. So no. That format is almost exactly like the "Movin" format that also failed in the bay. I would love to see a Rhythmic Oldies station that leans that way with a little more Freestyle and 90's... but I don't think it's gonna happen anywhere soon. KISQ is a REALLY solid station and if that's what you're after... they fill the void nicely. Also where stations like The Beat in Fresno fail is the RAP MUSIC. I LOVE RAP music... but RHY/OLD and RHY/AC stations are "AT WORK" stations... and "California Love" is not a good "at work" song. Rap = No office listening.
 
More than likely CC will tweak KFBT later on down the road to be similar to KISQ or KHYL. Now that KOKO is playing Classic Hits they have the perfect shot to go at it. As far as Rap goes KHHT here in Los Angeles plays a few crossover Rap hits during the workday. Nothing hardcore just the usual Puffy, Tone Loc and SugarHill Gang.
