WPRO's Dan York hedges his bet! (and I don't blame him)

With all of the layoffs in our business in recent years, it's good to see that at least one on air personality has an entrepreneurial spirit. Today at about 4:20 PM I heard WPRO's Dan York do a commercial for his political consulting company! WHY NOT? He has the skill set, he has the connections and maybe even locals will come flocking in order to get favorable treatment on his broadcast.

With ad revenues off nationwide and first quarter spending always extra low, I am sure the sales department gave him a very favorable rate. Maybe he even buys up the unsold inventory. WHY NOT? He doesn't even have to pay the endorsement charges. "That's why I started a political consulting business on the side," he exclaimed! "Do you need a speech written? Do you need to get prepped before the media? Call me I can help," York promised.

While other talent sits on the sidelines and just "hope" things get better, he goes out and starts a business. BRAVO Mr. York. With CDL trading these days around a dime, it might be well advised.

The instability in radio is probably why he started this business. He's setting up shop to save his ass. I don't blame him. Anybody working in radio BETTER have something else lined up. Yorke sees the writing on the wall. Even the best radio hosts get canned. It's happening more and more. This is a smart move. Hopefully it all works out for him when he needs it most.

Yes, Mr. Yorke's far Right views would be a huge draw in Rhode Island and SE Massachusetts political races. He is probably smart enough to moderate a bit for his clients...

If he's booked solid with his other sponsors, its not a wise idea for him bump the sponsors that are paying him for his own company.

1) Right now, its doubtful he's making much money(if anything) through the business, so paying sponsors puts money in the bank for that possible layoff.

2) Bumping a current sponsor is probably going to piss them off, and in tight economic, the owner may decide to pull the add if that's the case.

Not knowing the specifics of his contract. But if Citadel has a clause in it saying. If times are tough (poor revenue etc) we
will issue a cut in salary. Dan more than likely has an okay deal. Ratings Bonus, talent fee, vacation/sick days. Car to drive from the local Dodge dealership in East Providence. And other teet for tat. Make for a good deal!

Do you really think Dan's show is sold out? I would doubt that based on first quarter historicals and the sagging economy. Plus, I just heard over the weekend that Citadel is being "delisted" from the NYSE. Is this true? If so, this is a major blow to the company.

From ProJo...

I think Dan is pulling-your-leg about becoming-a-consultant.
He HATES consultants.
'Says so on-air...people-selling-advice are losers in his estimation.

Not-having-heard-the-show-referenced-here, I can't be sure, but I suspect he was tongue-in-cheek.

Was it P.T. Barnum who said "there's no 'bad publicity,'" and/or "Say what you will about me, just spell my name right?"

Dan and I share the angst of YEARS of people-leaving-the-"e"-off-the-end-of-our-surnames.

is this a joke? a political consultant? and who is he going to consult? So people running for office have to pay him? This is a major conflict of interest. If he gets paid by somebody, is he going to announce it when they are a guest on his show? Will he attack people who put him on the payroll? The real money will be in high level campaigns and he is going to hit them up for money? And some of you think this is smart? Wow. If he has a guest on, are they a guest or a client? Will WPRO get to see the books of who pays him? If a pol. tells him "no thanks" and he attacks them, is that because they told him "no". The FCC has rules against this type of thing. I find the guy very boring so I flip to Jay on 96.9. Maybe he should try to work on his show first. He sounds bored and unprepared on the air.

I read somewhere that something was passed to prevent delistings until september or november. I cannot find that now though, so I could be wrong there.
