Wrestling Champions on WMAQ (then WNBQ) Channel 5 in the early 1960's

Chicago was definitely a hot bed for pro wrestling in the 1950's and 1960's

There use to be a show on the current NBC affiliate between 1959 and 1963.

I consider since Wrestlemania 22 has ended in Chicago I was thinking

How good was that show compared to the shows of today?

And who ran the show: Fred Kohler (Chicago Promoter) or Vince McMahon Sr.

(Vinnie's Dad)

This is well before my time, but I do know that Kohler's promotion was on WGN in the early 50's. Where it went after that I'm not sure. Kohler was NWA President in 1961-1962, so it's possible it was the Chicago branch of the NWA that was aired on WNBQ.

I doubt that McMahon's Capitol Wrestling would air in Chicago during this time. McMahon was still an NWA member until 1963, so his matches would have only aired in the northeast. Dick the Bruiser's WWA was based out of Indianapolis, and regularly had shows in Chicago, began in 1964. And Chicago was a huge AWA territory in the 60's as well.

...judging from the clips that appeared on ESPN Classic five years ago or so, it was fairly good for the time...

...McMahon never promoted any further west than Pittsburgh (Bruno Sammartino's home town, significantly) at the time; his only Chicago activity was supplying occasional middle-level talent to Kohler's cards or, after him, Bob Luce. Same with the AWA until the early '80s...<P ID="signature">______________
