WRKO adds nightly sports betting talk show

if a tree falls in a forest....

10PM to Midnight on a Monday.....

Going up against Monday Night Football for 4 months out of the year

It would be better as a podcast.

It’s a Monday through Thursday show. And IMHO, MNF is not the must see TV it used to be.

But I do agree with your comment, “if a tree falls in a forest…”

Used to listen to pags on RKO when I went to bed at night. Now I just tune in his podcast since he posts them fairly quickly online.

If I have bad insomnia I guess I could turn on the jock sniffer. I can't think of anything more boring than a sports betting show.

I'm guessing it owes it's existence on the schedule to claim some of the betting ad/marketing money....and that's all.

God knows we see/hear enough of the betting ads now. iHeart probably figured they were missing out on betting revenue without a direct vehicle to offer. (Audacy was poised to grab it all.)

From my perspective it has nothing to do with listeners.....that's why it's on at 10PM. ;-)

It has to do with listeners who bet on sports, the same way financial advice shows have to do with listeners who invest, or do-it-yourself shows have to do with listeners who like to work on home improvements -- or oldies shows have to do with listeners who enjoy half-century-old (plus) pop hits. Audiences for sports betting radio might be a tiny niche now, and probably will never be a large one, but as more sports fans get into wagering on their favorite sports, betting-oriented sports talk will inevitably gain in popularity. It's just not for you, not "listeners" as a whole.

There’s nothing stopping iHeart from flipping 1200 to a mix of Fox Sports Radio and sports betting talk (“1200 The Gambler” lol). Whether or not it’d make more money than 1200’s current all-syndie conservatalk lineup would be the question.

To me, was just surprising to find it on RKO, which doesn't have a history of shows catering to the jock-sniffer demographic. It would seem very appropriate if it appeared on WEEI, wouldn't have surprised me there. However, I am assuming RKO is getting paid for the time rather than them paying to carry Pags. All their move did for me is make me pull up the Pags podcast at 10 rather than listening to it thru RKO.

I was as simple as iHeart saying "How do we get some of that betting money into our coffers (of which we have none as of now)."

WRKO at 10PM seems like a reasonable solution....even if there are no ratings and few listeners.

However, I am assuming RKO is getting paid for the time

I don't assume that.

Not a strong enough show at the moment to put on the Sports station, especially when the B's and C's are playing, but you have 10-Mid on WRKO, which is a near zero listener time slot and not a money maker, you slide a betting show in there and see what you can make of it.

It isn't like they are pulling a show they have developed and are invested in ( VB's "The Pit) and losing the dedicated sponsors.

If they get some sports book like MGMBet to buy time it is a win for them

Many seem to forget that WRKO and WEEI are no longer co-owned. iHeart doesn’t currently have a sports station to put it on.
