WRKO: Is About To Hire NEW Boston Radio Talent For 2008!

D

Finally, between you and me...RKO has finally been given the directive to hire some real Boston political talk talent. The suits at Entercom have decided to step-in and require the local RKO management to fix the broken "talk" station for 2008.

Word from the Inside is that Rush will be replaced with local show and the early show will be replaced with 2 hosts from the Boston area.
The weekend line-up is about to see sweeping changes in the months ahead.

WRKO insiders are talking about re-branding as "The Talk Station" once again...new logos have been discussed the last couple months...keep the faith everyone...this time they will get it right.

With a peanut-whistle signal from October through May during the morning and afternoon drive times, it doesn't matter who they bring in. When a Canadian signal overpowers you after you've passed the Weston toll booths, it's time to laugh at WRKO (and WEEI for that matter). For those who already laugh at Entercom, it's time to laugh even more at them.

And politically, if WRKO leans further Left in a state that is already capsized to the Left, that doesn't make for compelling radio. If that's the recipe for compelling radio in the Boston market, Air America would be a rousing success. No one wants to listen to talk radio where the host basically tells listeners that 'things would be just swell if only taxes went up further to pay for more layers of ineptness.' Or, 'Three men in a city-operated garbage truck isn't enough!!! We need FOUR men!!!'

Talk about parochial viewpoints! Only someone who lives in MetroWest could make such a comment about the market's second-best AM signal. (WBZ is the only one that's better.) Yeah, MetroWest is an important part of the market but it's far from the whole enchilada. However, a potential solution exists in the form of an LMA with WCRN. A simulcast (even just a nighttime-only simulcast, though a full-time simulcast would be better) on the two 50-kW full-time AM signals on 680 and 830 would cover eastern and central Mass at least as well as WBZ does.

i would joke and say mustard and johnson after their stellar fill in work. but knowing entercom's record, it isnt much of a joke.

i really wouldnt be surprised.

Interesting. First, regarding Rush, where would he land? WTTT 1150 would be a safe bet since WTKK has
no room (unless they tape delayed him till night). Or we could again speculate about Clr Chnl doing conservative talk on 1200 (and poss 1430, too). 1200 of course not the best signal but I guess they're in the final
stages of the new tower, etc., and Clr Chnl's syndie arm is Premiere, so you could have Beck and Rush
at least, with other syndie shows and some local.

830 would indeed be a good way for 680 to reach Metro West better, esp. in winter. They had signed on
to do Howie Carr but abanded the Fried Clam Man when his situation became unknown and went to local talk with Hank Stolz.

>>If that's the recipe for compelling radio in the Boston market, Air America would be a rousing success

There's still a chance prog talk could do well if DONE well, but as has been said before a) there already is
quite a bit of left-leaning media in this country, so maybe talk would just be redundant; b) past libtalk
attempts have tried to reach just the Left but not really gone for the center and Right (here's where
Donna would say, but what about Ed Schulz?); c) perhaps they'll
find the right mix of hosts (on one libtalk message board, even one libtalk fan had to admit that Franken's
voice was "molasses-laden". But it's true that in this state, even though Dems and libs dominate politics,
they haven't had much success in talk radio (it could be argued that signal strength or lack of local
hosts are part of that)...but it's also true that despite our image as the People's Republic of Mass.,
there are many here would would consider themselves fiscal conservatives, social conservatives,
advocates for a strong military, and so on.

It could be said that libtalk didn't take off here because they didn't really give it a chance. Similarly,
conservative politicians here have been lackluster and lacking so thus the Dem dominance, but I don't
want to go too far off topic. Anyway, the idea I'm getting at is that maybe Mass. isn't as liberal
as one would think, and those whose political opinions are center-right have found a home with
conservative talk.

>>if WRKO leans further Left in a state that is already capsized to the Left, that doesn't make for compelling radio

If Entercom had thought Air America/Jones shows would be a great ratings success, WRKO would have
gone to them long ago (similar to what they did at another 680 they own, down in Memphis--though
THAT station has given way to Fox Sports Radio)

Weekends on WRKO: better stuff in offing than informercials or weak hosts? :)

And if they're looking for two locals to co-host a morning show, what happens to the Felon?
Poss. lineup:
6-10 am: 2 local hosts, TBD
10-noon: Finneran (still under contract) or Hopkins
12-3: more local (Finneran?)
3-7: Howie

This sounds like a bit of a circle jerk to me. Limbaugh has an Entercom deal in other markets and losing the Boston clearance might adversely effect them where the show does better and there are other competitors who want it.

Sure, they can redo graphics, logos etc., but the key would be to retool the AM show (with or without Finneran). WRKO has enough to worry about without breaking one of the dayparts that isn't broken. It wouldn't be economically motivated - you could not get two decent hosts for the Limbaugh license fee (I have a rough idea of what it would be), and I can't imagine there would be enough pressure on the station's inventory to make the barter spots too painful.

My money is on a rebuilding effort in the AM and no change 12-3.

I have to admit: The entertainment value of this board rises steeply every time a post like this comes along. The idea that Julie and Jason would either discuss this on a message board or spill the beans to someone who would post it here, belongs in the Sunday comics section. I realize that critical thinking cramps the style of too many of this board's habitués, but try some for just a few seconds: Disloyal employees who post here aren't going to be in a position to know what upper management is thinking or doing until it's announced to the staff.

This one ranks right up there with Mr. MBBB (My Blog Burns Bridges) Brian Baloney's constant (constantly wrong, that is) predictions of doom, impoverished anonymity and collection of unemployment checks for J&J.

When you see the phrase "word from the inside," do a 180 and run the other way.

Hysterical--- insiders post and then refute their own rumors!!

That would make the most sense, altho I shouldn't make any assumptions about RKO management. I for one would love it if Rush wound up on FM since you could here him much better.

I don't know if it's drive-time tuning or the 12-3 slot (I agree with Smoke on the likelihood of messing with Rush syndication being low).

But I do know that at least two people who filled in with Finneran or worked other slots during 2007 were offered jobs but they couldn't agree with Entercom on money and hours since they both have jobs outside WRKO and weren't interested in the format being proposed. (And no, one of them isn't Avi. I read somewhere he wasn't interested in FT work, but I don't know him or know if he was offered it. He is way too dry and impersonal for me.)

Meanwhile, the consultants are bearing down on them to change things, and quick.

Does anyone know what happened to Feinburg? When considering possible new lineup, should we not consider him in the mix at all?

Feinburg will not be offered anything at the station...he never had a contract with RKO...he was asked to stay on as a fill-in host but he rejected the offer.

The 2 people being considered filled in during the morning slot before Finneran started. However both work outside of talk radio at the moment...1 guy is a DEMOCRAT the other guy is a REPUBLICAN. Both guys have major political experience and insider Beacon Hill contacts...this team could work to bring back some Political Fire in the morning...hopefully RKO can get them to sign a contract....

Stay tuned.....

Sciacca and Marge...? (Or Miller, if they lure him away from Albany..?)

I remember when Marge Clapprood had a Sunday night show on Lifetime TV ("Her ratings are so low/
More people watch The NASA Channel", went a song that Howie used to play--prob. by Bill Smith).
For a time, there was more than one big-haired, raspy voiced, Marge on Sunday night TV. (D'oh!)
