Dear Mr. Wolfe:
70 % of the voters chose Ted Kennedy today. Why did WRKO listeners
have to be subjected to the grade school conduct of a Level C Radio
Offender, Todd Feinburg, interrupting our Senator? A speech listeners wanted to
hear, a speech bombarded by WRKO catcalls and condescending remarks.
Rather than be subjected to such stupidity, I tuned to 1030 AM and heard
a radio professional, Paul Sullivan.
Mr. Wolfe, are you trying to tell us that Todd Feinburg is more professional
than Sully? That's what WRKO is forcing on us when they put Feinburg on the
same playing field. There's no contest. Feinburg must go.
- - - - -
Here's why WRKO is out of touch with Massachusetts. Howie Carr creates one of
his humorous nametags for Mitt Romney's chihuahua - Muffy. How quaint.
Then, a black man decides to run for Governor.
Suddenly, WRKO decides to take the ragdoll they have offended for the past
four years and make her their poster child. What's wrong with this picture?
WRKO acted like Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy in "Trading Places", pacifying
the African American employee while calling him the "n" word behind his back.
By endorsing the negative campaign of Kerry Healey, the woman your own station branded
"Muffy", WRKO made a choice. It was the wrong choice.
Deval Patrick's landslide victory was more than a humiliating defeat for
Kerry Healey's husband's pocketbook. It was a major blow to the RKO mantra
of force-feeding John DePetro, Mike Savage, Rush Limbaugh and other negative
entities on a Blue state that is now, like Michael Johnson, "bluer than blue."
Deval Patrick is Eddy Murphy teaming up with Dan Aykroyd and finding that
oasis away from their oppressors.
Ahhh for the days when WRKO played Michael Johnson, 1978. It might have been
a limited jukebox, but it was listenable. The junk on WRKO today is unlistenable.
We'll get to the Arbitrons in a second.
The station appears to revolve around Howie Carr's niche audience. The attacks
on Deval Patrick were not fair and balanced. The voters of the Commonwealth have
spoken. Entercom doesn't listen closely and carefully to the audience. Degrading
terms for homosexual men and women might be Free Speech, but are they really how
you want this 50,000 watt station represented? John Depetro, Spencer Hughes,
Todd Feinburg, Kevin Whalen/Gregg Jackson, even the tired sounding veteran Moe Lauzier,
all come across like very bad college radio. This is far from quality broadcasting.
Howie Carr is like the aging rock & roller that puts lousy artists on prior to his taking
the stage. ANYTHING sounds better than SpinalTap clones and Carr knows this.
Does Howie Carr have that much clout that he forces you to put little leaguers on a
beleaguered AM radio station? Carr has his book, his TV appearances, his legacy of
climbing up the Guest Street steps on the back of the late Jerry Williams. Interesting
that WRKO is looking for an on-air personality that can be a team player to replace
DePetro, a man who obviously was not. Your flagship show, H.C., has hardly set a good
example for your next 9 AM - Noon host or hostess.
The only talent WRKO currently has is/are Rod Fritz, Listo Fisher, Howie Carr, Scott Allen
Miller and maybe Nancy Shack. It's time for you, Mr. Wolfe, to scrub the deck in
anticipation of the Boston Red Sox coming onboard. I can assure you a letter writing
campaign to the Red Sox the first time Mike Savage's filthy mouth claims to be utilizing
the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution without allowing an opposing point of view
on the telephone. "Kerry Healey took a beating at the polls" Channel 7 news says at 11:12PM.
You know what that means? It means that WRKO took a beating at the polls as well.
WRKO is out of touch with the majority of people in the Commonwealth. It is time for a
brand new WRKO.
Look at the numbers that WBUR is bringing in. With George W. Bush's popularity lower than
low, Entercom is free to consider 2008. Former employee Rich Carberry reached out to me
to give him ideas about potential hosts for his Saturday night "Progressive" show. Jay Diamond was
interesting. I brought up Utopia founding member Moogy Klingman (Producer of Bette Midler with
Bob Dylan; Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, etc.). Mark "Moogy" Klingman hosted a New York radio show
with a progressive edge. Harvey Wharfield hosted a progressive show in New Hampshire a couple
of years back, a name voice with heritage in this city. Ed Schultz sounds like Rush Limbaugh only
is more spirited and right down the middle. He's not the progressive he claims to be and could
appeal to WRKO listeners as well as the new listeners he could bring onboard.
There is so much room for opportunity. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts needs a real
"talk" station. It won't be 1430 AM which switches over to 1200 AM if you are on 128 in
Waltham. Ridiculous. You can't get numbers that way.
The Red Sox will not stand for "fat lesbian", "f.g Matt", Michael Savage slurs, Rush Limbaugh
making "sport", to quote Howie Carr, of movie stars with serious disabilites.
We got change tonight at the polls. WRKO has to stop being as stubborn as George Bush,
because that has him sinking in quicksand. According to Radio & Records/Arbitron,
Nov 2006 WRKO has the worst 12+ ratings in 5 books.
Seems that the voters of the Commonwealth aren't the only ones who have spoken.
The Red Sox might save the day. They might not. Todd Feinburg certainly doesn't have
the talent, the temperament or the professionalism to be your white knight.
You, Mr. Wolfe, have to make the changes.
Sincerely,
Joe
