I think Mark W has it right. Entercom has flipped a couple of its FM stations to Classic Hits in the process of taking over the former CBS stations, including 94.7 WIAD Washington and 98.1 KXSN San Diego. So maybe Beasley wanted to avoid WROR getting a more standard Classic Hits competitor on 103.3.

By the way, Accuradio has a channel it calls "Rock the Yacht."

From what was described, WROR may have been using the term "Yacht Rock Weekend" but really didn't commit to a weekend of only Yacht Rock music.

WROR does some sort of music theme weekend every weekend, they’ve done many “more cowbell weekends” (“Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult, etc...), “summer song weekends”, etc.. but those features are really only maybe a couple of songs per hour. They don’t want to deviate from their regular playlist and their core more often than that.

Boston listeners are nothing if not brand-loyal. So long as Brine's voice is still heard during the show, even it only on ancient recorded material, then the show will remain Loren and Wally.

Now, this is just total speculation. But what if Entercom decided to flip WODS to Classic Hits anyway? Stranger things have happened. Just saying is all.

Big 105.3 is oldies, not classic hits. Different demos. MyFM self defines as 60's and 70's and 80's on its site, so it straddles the line between oldies and classic hits but is much more of a local community station with its website even covering obituaries and running lost pets on the air. They even air the "Daily Rosary".

"Big 105.3" FM (and 1570 AM) airs a national Oldies satellite feed (I believe from Westwood One). The playlist is not determined locally, so a format tweak on another local station would not effect it.

The station could change to a different satellite feed (such as Classic Hits instead of Oldies), but 105.3/1570 seems to have a niche with Oldies in the area since none of the major market analog (HD1) stations air Oldies any more. Since the FM signal is relatively small and doesn't cover the entire Boston market, and the AM signal is in the north edge of the market and goes low power at night, it wouldn't make sense for them to compete with powerful major market Classic Hits stations.

You are a most honorable man for making the distinction between Classic Hits and Oldies. WROR is classic hits; Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel is, well, oldies. I like oldies.

I've been listening to WROR since last night, and they are indeed an 80's pop/rock station (and more) station now.

What makes them differentiate from Magic's Back To The 80's Saturday night is that while Magic's show leans a little more modern, WROR is more well rounded and even plays a few of those songs missing from the '80-'82 era.

I am happy what they did and I am enjoying it!

I finally switched over to WROR a week ago, after WWBX continuing to play a drab format with very predictable show segments.

What I figured out is in order for this format to really work is that they have to cut out all the 70's music and only go all 80's instead! Now let's face it, Cyndi Lauper doesn't work well with 70's hit All Right Now. Also, a good new jingles package might well too!
