If you were listening to Jazz on WRVR 25 year today before noon, you were probably enjoying the sounds of Earl Kluge, Grover Washington Jr., Miles Davis, Dizzy Gilespie (spelling) and their like.
When the clock stuck 12:00, without notice the station switched to Country. Then came at the same time Sounderling Broadcasting which also owned 1600AM WWRL sold WRVR to Viacom.
The reaction to the format change was not well received. Fans of WRVR argued that RVR was the only place for jazz in New York.
WRVR was a station that had below mediocre ratings. But they had a devoted following.
Today we have WQCD-101.9 as an updated version of the former WRVR in New York (The call letters have resursafed in the south).
The only place to hear Jazz simular to what WRVR played is WBGO 88.3FM if you could pick it up.
Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy
