WSCR joins WBBM NewsRadio with HD on AM

I was in Chicago this morning and I noted the following stations on IBOC:

WSCR 670, WGRB 1390, (not completely sure: WRLL 1690 & WNDZ 750), and WRTO 1200. Geez! IBOC really sounds horrible on those frequencies and sidebands too. I wonder how this is improving sound quality when you can clearly hear an annoying buzz in the background. I don't think it was necessary to put IBOC on all these frequencies. Hopefully WGN does not follow the pattern.

I wonder if the stations are giving 50% refunds on their spots because their usuable bandwith is 1/2 of what they used to give to their advertisers.

Those of use with HD radio are enjoying the sound, except for WBBM, whats up with your signal???? Sounds like a web stream.

Now as far as the analog interference, I agree that it is an issue.

And that's just the issue that will cause regular listeners to feel they need to get "new radios", and they'll just end up getting an iPod or satellite radio or something else.

ummmmmmm Yup that would be correct.

Why would someone go to an iPOD or Satellite? So they can incur the monthly charges, and lower quality audio (for satellite)? Everyone has a CD player or something similar.

There was a study done recently where the iPod use, after so many months actually went down and people started going back to terrestrial radio. They didnt give up the iPOD but the hours of use went down.

Bascially if people want the new HD signals yes they will have to get a new radio for it. If they dont want them then they dont have to do a thing.

Your point is well taken and you are probably correct regarding the iPod. It's the satellite radio that is far scarier.

I think we should get a new band and do the HD Radio correctly.

Unfortunately easier said than done.

But look at Canadas digital. (Sorry forgot the name). They have a seperate band, and there are very few people listening to it. This according to an engineer friend of mine in Canada.
