WSJT/Tampa Flipping To Sports In August

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/107347/wsjt-tampa-flipping-to-sports-in-august

Feel free to reply to this thread with your comments. I will miss Play 98.7, however it is an Adult CHR flavor of Hot AC that focused primarily on currents and recurrents. Personally, I like something more like 96.9 WINK FM in Fort Myers as someone else posted earlier. Mix 100.7 is also better at including gold cuts from the '90s and even '80s. By the way, I am from Massachusetts, but I did live in St. Petersburg in 2008-2009 before moving back north. I will be moving back to Tampa Bay sometime within the next 10 years, but this time it will be for good! :)

* WSJT flipping to Sports? I never saw that coming... (sarc) Flipping from Smooth Jazz (later Soft AC) to Adult CHR/Hot AC was a sore thumb for CBS Radio Tampa.

* I can pull in WINK-FM from IRB. I like WINK.

* Such a shame Mix isn't doing all-80's EVERY WEEKEND...

* Welcome back to the Bay area! (soon) I was originally from up north and lived here in the Bay area for essentially all my life.

If this is true, they don't have to change the name...."Play 98.7" for sports sounds good.....or not. :D

Well CBS has put in several sports stations in many different cities, so I guess this is no surprise. While the signal for 98.7 isn't great it should cover most of the market alright. Since its a Talk format that helps matters a little, since it doesn't have to be in Stereo.

Yes, making all-80's a weekend staple on Mix would be awesome.

While Play 98.7 is a good station it isn't doing it with the ratings. I'm more of a music person than a sports person as well. At least Mix still plays a lot of the same music.

Icky-Poo is an interesting response lol... I would guess smooth jazz would stay on HD2, but wouldn't it be interesting if Play's format moves to HD2 displacing it? Then again, the HD saturation is the minority anyway.

I think Play is better than Magic, but I guess nobody else does

What do you get when you combine three extremely strong direct competitors (FLZ, Mix and Hot, the latter of which has enjoyed a ridiculous promotional push over the last 12 months), a significantly weaker signal than those three competitors, confused music and positioning (edgy for a HAC but not quite CHR), an in-cluster Rhythmic that doesn't want you creeping too close to the CHR border, and minimal promotion and backing from CBS?

Play 98.7 was a perfect storm of handicaps. MsMusicRadio, you're right that they're a good station and sounded more interesting than a number of their competitors, but it didn't matter...they were doomed from the get-go. I've said before that if CBS had launched Play as a straight-ahead CHR, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

It's especially a shame because the jocks are all large-market caliber and deserve much better. With their talent, I hope they'll prosper in new radio homes.

You not the only one who thinks that. The playlist, the imaging, jocks and all.

Magic's playlist is just freeze framed and never really updated. They did add some extra music to the playlist last year but even then nothing has been added since. Meaning the station is still rather stale.

I also believe Chadd and Kristi is the only programming on the station that is live. I believe Kieth Conner's and Ann Kelley's shows are VT'ed. Delilah is just not doing it, go jockless during the evenings for all I care.

THIS is what Jerry Petuck left 620 for? A "born to go bust" Assistant PD job he won't even have in six months?

There had to have been a behind-the-scenes fallling out with Petuck and 620, no way in hell someone leaves the security of producing the highest-rated show in the market for a job with the lowest-rated rival (1010).

The press release said that the line-up hasn't been decided and Justin Powlowski (sp?) admitted he had no idea if he was going to be on the new show.

If they keep Lynne, Justin, and J.P., instead of having all new talent, than the station will be a joke. I assume they'll do like CBS did in Cleveland when they launched a FM sports talk station and raid "up and coming" talent from other markets to serve as the flagship hosts (Adam the Bull from the YES Network in the Cleveland example). No way in hell you flip to FM with J.P. "Captain Live Read" Peterson, Justin "I Can Only Get Sleazy Lawyers and Water Filter Installers as Sponsors" Powlowski, and Lynne "Hooters Pays My Bills" Austin as the main talent.

In Pittsburgh they went with a lineup like this....

Morning show... 2 local TV guys, one of whom had previously done a radio show as well on KDKA, and an update guy from the recently-folded ESPN O&O...

Middays... local writer with a transplanted New Yorker who was a baseball writer and had worked for the Giants and Mariners' radio networks...

Afternoons... another local writer with John Seibel from ESPN radio, later joined by former Steeler punter Josh Miller

Evenings.. a kid from NY who had been the producer of the "Boomer & Carton" show on WFAN. He turned out to be the best guy on the station and has replaced one of the TV guys on the morning show.

Nights... a young guy with hosting experience from Buffalo. He has since moved to evenings.

Overnights... the winner of a "star search" contest from the ESPN station. Now late nights, with replays overnight.

So out of a 24-hour live and local lineup to start, about half of the crew was local and those guys don't really carry the station. Yes, that's a lot of bodies, but you can do that and make money if you're not paying music royalties.

So don't expect to know who everyone is on day one when this hits the air.

I will miss Play. Maybe if Hot didn't flip, but they did and Play ges whacked. CBS should at least put some of the Play staff on Q105 overnights and week-ends.

RadioInsight just posted this on their Facebook status...

"Eight CBS AM's will flip to a 24/7 simulcast of the CBS Sports Radio Network. 67 Cumulus stations will affiliate with the network."

So 1010/98.7 may have more changes coming than just adding the FM to the existing product.

Edit: Found a CBS press release: http://www.cbspressexpress.com/cbs-radio/releases/view?id=32154
WQYK-AM is listed as going with the new network when it launches Jan 2013. WSJT-FM is listed as "will add various components of CBS Sports Radio programming to their lineup".

"WTFN" is an available combination.

I'd pick those up in a minute, and not because of the "WTF" inference since we already know the transmitter is in the "West Tampa Florida" Market.

;D

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Sounds like they had to announce the flip of WSJT yesterday because of the pending CBS Sports Radio announcement today. WSJT and WQYK-AM in Tampa Bay was gonna show up on that affiliate list.
