WTFM's Sunday @ da 70's is histoire! Or at least it seems that way...

My wife loves 70's music so she listens to Sunday at the 70's as we go to church and we noticed last week that WTFM was playing stuff from the 90's and currents. At first, I thought they screwed up their clocks in Selector or something. Well, it was gone yesterday, too. I guess that means it is history. The only thing I can figure is that they think 12 or 13 years of that is enough. That's all fine and good, but if you're not going to even voice-track on Sundays, you need something there to hold the listeners attention. But what gets me is the fact that Sunday Arbitron numbers were always pretty good, considering you don't have voice-tracking or anything other than imaging. If you're tired of the 70's, why not try something else like the 80's.

It might be the new PD, but if I were a gambling man, I'd say it is not. Since McKinney left, Widener has taken more power from the PD. Even with Mark, David pretty much had grabbed a lot of decision making power from the PD...all three of them. I hate to say this, but most of the responsibilities for the PD are to generate the logs, make the weekend schedule and implement any upper management decisions and that's most of it. If I had to take a guess, this decision was made by either David or by the consulting firm, Vallie. Could be wrong, but that's my thinking.

"Either way...It's the Blind leading the Blind!!"

Hmmmmmmm. And I thought the radio guys upstairs at 222 Commerce Street pretty much knew their stuff, that is, compared to the people downstairs on the TV side of the building. Does anybody out there remember the ill-fated Joint Sales Agreement that they had with WCYB?

Believe me, it wasn't a fond memory of mine. :)

I apologize if I have already used this analogy about HVBC's, aka David Widener's, decision making, but it bears repeating, nonetheless...

Here's a hypothetical for you. Let's say that you owned a car. It was having some engine problems. They take it to the mechanic. He tells them that the problem can be fixed by a $30 oil change or if they wait another week, it'll destroy the engine and cost them three-grand. Now you make the call...

Do you (A) go ahead and get the oil change, thus saving the engine from further damage, at a relatively low cost?

......OR......

Do you (B) opt to forgo the oil change to save $30 to pad your end-of-year bonus, but risk the $3,000 if the engine blows up?

If you said "A" and work at Holston Valley Broadcasting Corporation...you chose INCORRECTLY!!!! Saving $30 today is more important than saving three grand next week. They don't see it as saving $3,000...they see it as having to spend thirty. That company simply cannot think strategically. It's always stuck in the moment.

In other words, Citadel (and probably Bristol Broadcasting and, most likely, even every mom n' pop station in the market) would spend the thirty bucks to fix the engine.

(on a funny note, I had used that anaology for years, but it actually happened, in an around and about way. The oil in the WTFM Bread Truck hadn't been changed in so long, that it actually did damage the engine a little while back. I thought that was kind of funny!)

Truth be told, It's about time that WTFM now has someone in the PD chair (Mark Baker) that is actually Programming an A/C format. I never liked the fact that WTFM was always changing the format during certain dayparts ie: 70's lunch, 70's drive home, sunday at the 70's, 70's flashback...Crap, when is enough, enough. I asked Mark a simple question. Can't WTFM just be what we are (an A/C station) instead of pretending to be an "Oldies Station" in every other daypart. Great things are happening at WTFM, I for one couldn't be happier (my workload has decreased ;D) the Music is getting better and the entire staff are happy campers now.

I don't remember the year, but I was in the mountains one time when they were playing "Working for the Weekend" by Loverboy on Friday afternoon. I think they also played the original "Layla". Actually, I know they did, but I only heard the long instrumental part at the end. I didn't hear whether they did it from the start.

Reply to Promotion Has-Been below:
WKPT-TV's sales-news-promotion marketing agreement was with WJHL-TV, not WCYB-TV.
WCYB-TV's sales agreement is with WEMT-TV, Channel 39.

Actually, csneed, WKPT-TV originally DID have a JSA with WCYB before the one with Media General/WJHL. As I remember, WCYB was losing money on the deal and they opted out of it. It's true. It was in the early part of this decade.
