OH NO!!!! Radio talk show host to serve time for theft, racketeering
Sports radio talk show host Charles “Scott” McKinney will serve at least a year and a day in prison for bilking investors out of over $100,000.

McKinney pleaded guilty today to nine counts of theft and single counts of organized fraud, money laundering and racketeering, said prosecutor Russ Edgar. Sentencing was scheduled for Feb. 24. Eight of the theft charges involved money taken from investors in McKinney’s Southern Sports To-night radio program. The ninth involved
McKinney stealing approximately $10,000 from his ex-fiance using her credit card, Edgar said. Edgar said the plea arrangement, which could land McKinney in prison for up to five years, was de-signed so that the talk show host would not be serving his sentence in a county jail. “We don’t want our victims to hear him broadcasting from the county jail on a work release,” Edgar said. The plea came with a trial date scheduled for Monday.
 
I've always heard there was something fishy going on down there in FWB. So how will this affect the The Ticket?

A quick look at the website give a couple of fun hints:

1.) I guess they called the law team on the right of Scott's mug on the site (Andrew Nap and the other dude.)
2.) Maybe the sales from Monavie (spelled wrong on the site) have kept everyone from rotting in jail.
3.) Scott's show is realled called SCOTT'S MORNING WRAP! Too funny.

What a damn joke...
 
I know I could answer this question myself by just turning on my radio, but is "Southern Sports Tonight" still on the air? If not, what has it been replaced with?

And along with Monavie being misspelled on their site, if you look at their advertisers listing, some of those businesses went under at least 5 years ago.
 
Well the "bad boy" made the local news today, and get this... he's STILL ON THE AIR! What the [you know what] is going on with that station? I don't know how much of the story the radio-info.com gods will let me post, so here's a link to the lengthy article. Maybe this bump will get the board going again.

I don't see how anyone could take McKinney seriously after being convicted. I know its a sports station and not a business news format, but still.
 
that nice little building still has no for sale sign. i wonder what this crap will do to his 'station" and ratings (though, i do enjoy the satellite fed KROCK and wishes there was more LOCAL shows again.)

Hey, I'm going to slip in and agree with Rob here. The satellite fed KRock 100.3 coming out of that nice little 2 story building housing Star Broadcasting is a blessing to our local airwaves. Sometimes the Jocks on 99Rock get too full of themselves and talk too much instead of playing music, although that may have ended with last month's layoffs... I haven't kept up since Thanksgiving. The previous incarnation of 102.1 where they tried to be a AAA leaning Jack Rocker was the best, but when they started sliding all over the road it became a total wreck, someone must have suffered a concussion because they forgot who they were and found a bunch of old cassette tapes and turned the station into an '80's AC Jack... and Rob doesn't like their sound quality anymore, maybe someone stored those cassettes near a magnet! I'd love to see a "for sale" sign pop up on Star's building. It's just the type of real estate I'd jump all over... the building, not the three radio stations holed up inside.
 
Do you all think that Star owns the building? of course not...do your homework....there will be no sign on the building, but 98.1 ... was up for sale and was sold twice to two different buyers...and still in court.....why wouldn't Scott still be on the air, birds of a feather......hmmmmm, interesting huh?
 
Why wouldn't Mckinney be on the air? Well, at some point he should be sentenced to some jail time. Then we might find out he still has some of that cash stashed away for a lawyer to get him an appeal and out on bail again. Then sometime next year after the appeal is closed he might serve some more time, unless he winds up in Mexico. The next resurrection of Southern Sports Tonight might be broadcasting on an "X" station originating from a whore house in Tijuana.
 
Good lord how is this poor excuse for a sports station still on the air? Gulf coast radio really stinks these days. Thank goodness for internet radio.
 
I was shocked at the recent Arbs. They actually showed up. Do they still run Bill O'reilly/
He has a sports show, as well. I never knew.

Yeah, I think they are still airing O'reilly. I recently overheard the boys talking about there being some talk shows (including O'reilly) on FM 98.1 now. Guess I'm going to have to start buying the AM/FM radio option in new trucks instead of the ol' standard AM radios. Next they'll want air conditioning and power steering. I'm drawing the line at those automatic transmissions and catalytic converters. Money doesn't grow on trees.

It's getting cold down here. Time to break out the bourbon!

103.1 sounds like 102.1
98.1 (as the thread is talking about)
really needs to make up it's own damn mind. sports..blah. why? so the one taxi cab driver can enjoy hearing the gators while driving in FWB metro??

How about making radio fun again or have we just decided to say ahh f'''k that!

Uh, Rob, if there's one thing you can count on in local radio, it's that the Gators are going to be on a 100kw FM. That fact is not up for debate.

And it's not just that one taxi driver listening to the Gators, it's more like 1 in 10 people with their radio on during a Florida game have the Gators tuned in... some games it might be closer to 1 in 3.
 
The final decision's come down... McKinney's going to make license plates for the next five years, followed by 50 years probation, all while trying to come up with $180,000 to pay restitution to his victims.

McKinney admits that he's let down his radio listeners and apologized to them in his statement before the court, but none of his "victims" bothered to show up in court to hear him speak. I guess they wouldn't believe a word he had to say at this point.

Star Broadcasting had "No Comment."

No plans have been announced to replace the 7 hours a day of programming Scott hosted on WTKE, but WEAR implied that Star was going to continue the "Southern Sports Tonight" show with different hosts, even though McKinney sold over 290% of the ownership stakes in the show to individual investors that I would think would at least have a claim to the name of the show, not including the people in Memphis that had previously invested in the show.

I'm sure this story made the news in several places. I heard the report on the WEAR TV news and followed up by reading the NW Florida Daily News article online (linked below). I'm sure an article will appear on PNJ.com tomorrow and probably in other industry sources.
