WTRC: "Hippie Radio 1340: Radio for Baby Boomers"

Per an article in the Elkhart Truth, WTRC Elkhart is becoming "Hippie Radio 1340: Radio for Baby Boomers" sometime on Friday.
http://www.etruth.com/Know/News/Story.aspx?id=490585

"Music of the 1960s and early '70s will replace talk show programs featuring Sean Hannity, Clark Howard, Brian and the Judge and others at some point during the broadcast day on Friday. ... The change comes in response to a perceived weariness on the part of the radio station's core audience for politically-charged radio show drama."

"Fox news updates, Michiana News Channel news and local weather will bookend the morning show at the top and bottom of each hour. During afternoon and evening programming, in addition to syndicated political talk shows, 1340 will also forego coverage of regional sports. Elkhart County football and basketball games should remain, but Cubs games, IU basketball games, Colts games and Indy Racing League events are out due to the large number of competitors and the station's decision to make music the dominant format. Sunday morning broadcasts of Trinity Methodist Church's service also cease after tomorrow."

I live in Elkhart and grew up on WTRC. The change has been needed for years! Allen Strike retired on 7-31 and told me in an e-mail that the Indianapolis races that were a staple of WTRC would be cut as well (sucks-due to history of WTRC carrying them for a long time). Sad to see Bill Darwin and Mike Maloney leave as well as IU sports (even though I am not a sports nut--but others expect IU sports there). Trinity UMC broadcasts are now on 91.1 WGCS 'The Globe'. Bill Darwin's last day is Thursday.

Anyone have any more information on DJ's (off bird or local?)

I'm assuming this is the format that has had a banner ad on Radio-Info for the past week or so? (I thought this was a show, not a format). The ad mentions Charly Butcher (WOWO's Charly Butcher?). Interesting to find out more.

Since Charly Butcher already works for Fed Med, maybe they're going to broadcast an endless automated loop of his Hippie Radio shows. A kind of Radio Disney for an older generation.

If you listen to the demo on the link posted by justalurker, they use a fictional radio station, thats based in south bend..."Hippie 106.3", several jocks that work at other Fed Med outlets, and the same jingles and voiceover guy as used on Fed Med's Froggy 102.7 in Elkhart & Froggy 106.7 in Auburn... interesting.

That's because the format is based there.

What was Peoria's format before going "hippie"? The ratings jump is interesting (and probably why Fedmed is making the change at WTRC). Those who want the dropped sports programming come and go ... but Hannity has an audience.
